Hope Haven Team Leader Oliver breaks down the newest OTC product called Kratom — that herbal supplement you can buy at gas stations, marketed for pain relief, energy, mood, and anxiety.

What many people don’t realize is that kratom contains compounds that act on the same opioid receptors as morphine and oxycodone. It’s a powerful opioid, and some of the newer extracts and derivatives are even stronger.

Even if you start taking it casually, your body can become dependent in just a few weeks. When you try to stop, the withdrawal can be brutal — very similar to he**in or prescription opioid withdrawal: restless legs, nausea, diarrhea, mood swings, hot/cold flashes, insomnia, and body aches.
