Wellness Wednesday! Sending midweek inspiration to you to try to add more veggies to your meals.

One of my favorite simple mass prep meals (perfect for quick weeknight dinners) is a orzo or quinoa salad. Add cubes of barbequed chicken, cherry tomatoes, spinach, cucumber and feta along with a simple splash of olive oil, salt and pepper. Let me know what you think!

Sometimes you have to move through the uncomfortable to find the comfortable. Growth and change happens slowly and often with constant meditation on your intention. One of my hobbies is gardening where spring is always filled with new blooms and hope, but to get to spring, the garden has to survive the winter.

This week/weekend symbolizes history of sacrifice and is ultimately a celebration of hope.

Apply these concepts to your health and wellness journey and you will see success.

Photo from one of my favorite local garden centers - great for enjoying the season and meditation!

Interesting how much clearer we see our past decisions when we near the end of our journey.

If we invert the regrets of the dying into mantras for the living, we can honor the journey of our elders and set clearer goals for ourselves.

1. I will have the courage to live a life true to myself - not the life others expect of me.
2. I will work to earn a living so that I may enjoy time with my family.
3. I will have the courage to express my feelings to others.
4. I will cherish my friendships and connections to people who bring me joy.
5. I will choose to recognize the good in my life, and that happiness is my choice.

We choose how to perceive ourselves and the world around us. Choose wisely.

Your body is a much better record keeper than you may be giving it credit for.

This can be great for “snapping back” into shape if you’ve been away from the gym for awhile. People are surprised at how quickly their body adapts to its old patterns. It almost feels like magic - similar to watching a shape-memory alloy return to its original shape when heated.

However, this “memory” is a double edged sword when applied to past instances of self neglect or injuries. I often hear “But I didn’t really do anything” from patients that have neglected themselves for one day too many.

If you had an old injury and didn’t put the work in the first time around, you have a debt that is owed to your body for the repair bill. While your body may carry a debt for awhile, don’t be surprised when the tab comes due.

“Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it ... he who doesn't ... pays it.”

-Albert Einstein

Here’s a quick explainer on the difference between a “knee break” and a “hip break” squat.

While this sounds painful, the name reflects which body part moves first.

In a “hip break” squat, the pelvis and hips move posteriorly. This is typically used for a back squat, and places more load on the glutes.

In a “knee break” squat, the knees move anteriorly first. This is typically used in a front squat, and places more load on the quadriceps.

Both styles are important to learn to improve overall athleticism, as we want the flexibility to train both styles without jamming up the spine.

Practicing with a foam roller (or a staff) is a great way to ensure your core is engaged to prevent your low back from being overly compressed during the squat.

Bonus: How to use the foam roller to learn a hip hinge for a RDL (Romanian Deadlift).

Whenever you feel that your goal is out of reach, just remember, a steady progression of work will always place you one step closer to your target.

It may not be today, tomorrow, or even this year. But if you want it, you can have it. Just be consistent.
