It is National Women Physicians Day!
I am very proud to be a woman physician. I am the first doctor in my family and am honored by being able to do my job and help other women and people plan and grow their families.
This isn’t to say being a woman physician isn’t hard. It is a ton of school, testing, and education. It is working long hours and getting little sleep. It is making sacrifices and missing loved ones major life events to help others.
As a woman and as a mom, it can be challenging to balance it all. Like all people, I have hardships and difficult days. My kids get sick or injured. My husband has to travel for work. Despite it all I just keep going. I try to not only be super doctor, but super mom and wife and woman!
I think it makes me a better doctor though - especially in my field where many women have and continue to struggle with a variety of issues. As a woman who has had struggles of her own, I get it. I sympathize and I know how hard it is to juggle it all.
Female physicians have been linked to improved patient outcomes in numerous studies. There can be a level of care there that can be hard to come by.
I love my job, my patients, and my colleagues. Today is a day to honor all the hard working female doctors. To acknowledge their efforts, the seen and unseen care, their dedication, and love they have for what they do.
