Let’s talk about babies and elderberry syrup!
🍯 Honey isn’t recommended for children under one. When making a batch of elderberry syrup, set some aside for baby before adding the honey to the rest of the batch. Baby can have the “syrup” as is without the honey or you could add maple syrup, molasses, agave, or another sweetener.
⚠️ If you omit the sweetener all together, this will make elderberry juice which will need to be consumed much more quickly. This freezes nicely as well.
🧊 When Natalie was a baby, I did not add a sweetener to hers and I froze her “syrup” in these mini ice cube trays https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L7ZFBXW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_VOPzT2KxhvegV. Each cube is approximately 1/4 tsp. so I gave her one cube a day. I would take out one cube each morning, let it thaw on a spoon, and she would drink it right off the spoon! 1/4 tsp. is the amount I felt comfortable giving a baby but I’m obviously not a doctor so you should consult your baby’s doctor if you have questions on dosing. If your baby doesn’t like the taste, you can mix the syrup into their food or milk.
I can always make elderberry syrup without the honey. Just ask!
