North Country Hospital Consolidates Sleep Services to Strengthen Patient Care

Newport, VT - North Country Hospital today announced the consolidation of sleep services from St. Johnsbury into the North Country Hospital Sleep Center effective June 1, 2026. This is a planned step designed to enhance care and ensure long-term access to services for patients across the region.

The consolidation allows North Country Hospital to bring resources together in a single location, strengthening clinical support, improving coordination of care, and continuing to meet the needs of patients close to home.

“By consolidating services, we are able to enhance the overall patient experience while maintaining the high-quality care our community expects,” said Thomas Frank, CEO “Our focus remains on making sure patients continue to receive the care they need with minimal disruption.”

Patients currently receiving care will continue to do so without interruption. North Country Hospital has also begun directly informing current patients about the consolidation and the upcoming transition of services. The hospital’s care team is working individually with each patient to coordinate
appointments, answer questions, and ensure a smooth and seamless continuation of care.

North Country Hospital remains committed to delivering care that is personal, accessible, and rooted in the communities it serves.

For the first time since the covid pandemic, NCH proudly welcomed back the Teddy Bear Clinic on May 13th and 14th. More than 200 kindergarten students from Lowell, Jay/Westfield, Brighton, Newport City, Newport Town, Barton/Glover, Irasburg, Orleans, Coventry, and Derby elementary schools visited the hospital for learning, exploration, and fun.

Students were invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal for the experience, helping to make the hospital environment feel friendly and approachable. In the Emergency Department, nurses helped “treat” the stuffies by weighing them, giving them a shot, and applying bandages. The young visitors also toured the Radiology Department, where they learned about X-ray machines and how they help doctors care for patients.

The children then had the opportunity to explore an ambulance and meet EMS crews, who explained how they help people during emergencies. The visit also included a brief summer safety course, helping students learn important tips for staying safe during their upcoming summer vacation months.

The Teddy Bear Clinic has been a cherished tradition in the community for more than 30 years. The program was originally started by Merrilyn Barry and Chris Beersworth (sp?), whose vision helped create a fun and educational experience designed to make children feel more comfortable around hospitals, healthcare workers, and medical equipment. Their legacy continues through the hard work of staff and volunteers who created a joyful experience for the students while creating lasting memories.

North Country Hospital would like to extend a special thank you to Kathy DiCarlo for organizing and coordinating this wonderful event and helping make its long-awaited return such a success.”
