As kids gear up for a new school year, don’t forget to check their backpacks! The Hamilton County Health Department reminds parents and caregivers that heavy or improperly worn backpacks can lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain.

✅ Here are a few simple tips to keep kids safe:

• Choose a backpack no wider than your child’s torso

• Make sure it sits 2 inches above the hip and no more than 4 inches below waist

• Use both shoulder straps—no one-shoulder slinging!

A few small changes can make a big difference.

The Hamilton County Health Department traveled to Phoenix this week for the National Environmental Health Association's annual conference. From food safety and water quality to climate and health, infectious disease control, and emergency preparedness, our team participated in sessions that will help shape a safer, healthier Hamilton County. We’re proud to bring back what we’ve learned and put it to work right here at home!

🚨Fire Safety Reminder from Carmel Fire

This probably looks like a scene straight out of your garage, chargers, batteries, maybe a drill or leaf blower always plugged in.

Charging your tools? ✅ Great.
Leaving them plugged in 24/7? ❌ Not so great.

Lithium-ion batteries (like the ones in your tools) can overheat, especially when they’re left constantly charging or stored near flammable materials. Unplug once they’re fully charged, and don’t store charged batteries in extreme temps (like a hot garage in July).

Small habit change. Big fire prevention.
