Today, July 25th, is World Drowning Prevention Day.

Drowning is so incredibly prevalent, BUT also incredibly preventable. This summer my world was rocked by two near-fatal drowning events in my very own neighborhood. I am so thankful both babies are okay, but it just put into perspective how important ISR is. Looking back at my last few sessions, I am so thankful for my little swimmers and I am so proud of all of them.

I am also reflecting on my first 8 months of being a Certified ISR Instructor. I’ve been able to teach 171 students to date and I am so thankful for the families that have committed to me and to the ISR program.

ISR is an incredible barrier of protection for your children. If you have any questions, please reach out. I’d love to be a resource to you and your family.

STROKE LESSONS AVAILABLE!

Hi all! Occasionally my schedule allows for me to teach stroke lessons. I am taking next week off of teaching ISR to my little swimmers to be with my family during the last week of summer- BUT I just opened my schedule for the next two weekends to teach some bigger stroke kids.

If you want to get your older kiddos in for stroke lessons, message me and I will send you my booking link. I have taught stroke lessons for 15+ years. Lessons will be Saturday/Sunday mornings in Carmel. 20 minutes long and 1:1 private lessons.

**I am not contractually allowed to teach children under 4 anything but the ISR program. Please make sure your child is 4+ and has a solid swim and float already in place. These lessons are for stroke progression for children that already know how to swim.

A popular Tiktokers 3 year old son has drowned causing another painful reminder that drowning is the #1 cause of death in children ages 1-4. It's silent, quick and does not discriminate. It happens to the best of parents- the ones that are right there. I hate that events like this remind parents, like myself, that water safety is crucial.

Memorial Day is a few days away, pools are opening and "drowning season" is beginning. I'm sharing six tips to bring to the forefront of your mind before you go enjoy the pool with your littles this coming summer!
------------------------------------------------

1. Install safety barriers: Door locks, pool fences, alarms- anything that will provide an extra layer of security and safety!
COVER your pool as soon as you get out. If you get out to grill burgers or sing happy birthday to someone, simply cover the pool back up. It takes a few seconds to do. You can open it right back up when it is swim time again. 60% of drownings happen in non-swim times.
*****If you own a pool in a neighborhood, you should close your pool even if you do not have little ones at risk. Many toddlers find their way to the neighbors pool. There is no reason to leave your pool open and unattended all day if you are not outside enjoying the pool yourself.

2. Keep large floats and balls/toys out of the water after swim time is over if you have littles. Many drownings happen when a child is reaching for an interesting toy or ball, and they gently slip into the water.

3. Assign a water watcher. 88% of drownings happen with at least one adult present. If everyone is watching the water, truly no one is watching the water. It happened to us last year, we were at a party and everyone was chatting (facing the pool), Cohen slipped into the deep end and was working on getting to his back float but I could tell he was panicked. I didn't see that he made to the deep end from the shallow end and it happened because there was not one person solely focused on the water.
The water watcher should never be on their cell phone.

4. If you are the water watcher, you SHOULD NOT be drinking alcohol. Self explanatory.

5. A child should never wear water wings, puddle jumpers or swim suits with built in floats.
They are dangerous, restrict arm movement and promote the vertical drowning position with a false sense off security and confidence. If a child is in the water, an adult should be in the water swimming with them ALWAYS. We should not be teaching children that they can get into water without adults. This is why most children elope back to the water by themselves. If a child can't independently swim or self-rescue, they need to be held, played with and given opportunities to swim to the steps etc. If you must put your child in something, life jackets are a better option but still not ideal.
*That being said- if you are by an open body of water, life jackets must be worn ALWAYS. If you are on a boat, even just sitting idle, life jackets should be on!

6. Lastly, enroll your child in ISR and keep your child in regular maintenance. ISR is the number one self-rescue program. Although the name is Infant Swimming Resource, it works for children as old as 6 and up. I am currently swimming so many 4, 5, and 6 year olds that are loving the program and doing amazing! Swimming lessons should be prioritized before ANY other extracurricular activity. Dance lessons don't save lives, self-rescue lessons do!
Please reach out to get on my schedule. We are booking for Carmel, Noblesville and Westfield. http://www.indyinfantswim.com

Thank you for reading this far! This is the MOST important safety information you will hear as a parent. More important than car seat safety, stranger danger, etc.

Please do not let your children become another statistic this year! Reach out if you have any questions. I am happy to help walk through this information!

So good!

So good!

Recently we were at an event where we encountered multiple people who didn’t want to hear what we had to say about water safety. Their opinion was that parents just need to “watch their children” and this wouldn’t happen.

Wow I wish it were so simple. If it was, my child would still be alive.

The truth is:

1) Most kids who drown do so during non swim times when they arent supposed to be in or near the water and parents are not expecting them to be there.

2) Many, many kids who do drown right in front of people, never get noticed. Not because parents aren’t watching, but because they don’t SEE what’s happening, even right in front of them.

How can this happen?

It’s called Inattention Blindness and every human has it, all the time.

Every second our senses take in 11 million pieces of data. But we can only consciously process between 40-60 pieces of that data at any given time. Everything else we become blind to and that’s not in our control.

Which data do we pay attention to?

Whatever is louder, brighter, stronger and lasts longest….and drowning isn’t any of those things.

Drowning is silent. It’s almost invisible because it happens almost completely under water and it’s fast.

Our senses will attend to the splashes of kids, the squeals of play in the water, the noise of parents directing their kids, the toys being tossed around in the water, the whistle of the lifeguard before they will ever be drawn to a drowning victim.

This means you can be right next to your child in the water, they can be drowning right in front of you (yes this has happened, many times) and you wouldn’t even know.

It’s even harder to see a drowning when you have more than one child to attend to.

It’s the same thing that happens when your child is in the kitchen with you while you are cooking and you turn around to see they have grabbed a pack of flour and have spread it all over themselves and the floor. In that case it makes a great picture to laugh at later. If it happens near water, it’s a much different outcome.

But it happens. It can happen to any of us. It’s a lapse in supervision brought on by a limitation to our ability to see and attend to everything around us, especially the quiet things. It is NOT a lack of supervision.

Is supervision critical for our children’s safety? Of course!! But it can’t be the only thing we depend on to keep our kids from drowning. And it’s not as simple as “just watch your kids”.

It takes supervision (never outside of an arm’s reach of a non-swimmer and water watchers for swimmers). It takes barriers to getting to the water like pool fences, locks and alarms. It takes teaching your child skills to survive if they do fall or get into water without you.

It takes layers of protection to keep our kids safer around water.

It’s never so simple as just “watch your kids”.

Excited to announce Aubrey Herron ISR 💙💚🦭

Two weeks ago, I left corporate America and started out on a journey with Infant Swimming Resource after 9 months of praying and planning. I am currently in the middle of my training program in Cincinnati and I am so excited to continue to bring ISR to Indy!

ISR became a huge passion of mine as I watched my own kids become water efficient in a world where drowning is the number one cause of death in children ages 1-4. ISR allows me to combine my love for swimming, tiny humans and aquatic safety all in one. Infant Swimming Resource is proven to be the safest and most effective self rescue program since the 1960s.

Today marks the start of week three out of six in my training and I have loved being able to combine my 10 years of teaching traditional swimming lessons with the theory, practice, psychology and guidance of ISR.

I will be available for lessons starting late November and I’m excited to meet you and your babies as we help them become safe in and around the water.

Check out my website for more info and to sign up. Safe swimmers are made in the fall/winter!
