These days it seems like things are moving incredibly fast. That feeling most of us have isn’t imagined, it’s real. The accelerating pace of technology largely contributes to why things feel so breakneck. Although Moore and Martec laws aren’t empirical, they do provide useful context for understanding what we are experiencing.

Here’s an example of where that middle school algebra and high school calculus that you thought you’d never use again comes in handy.

Exponential (hockey stick) growth and linear (straight line) growth diverge. This divergence creates the necessity for human and organizational resets in order to keep up with technological advances. We fall way behind if we aren’t creating and employing strategies that help us accelerate personal and organizational growth.

It’s been a rough 30 days.

Our original business up in flames. Being non-operational.

Waiting on other people and processes supposedly intended to assist in these situations.

Testing my resolve.

Here’s some of what I’ve learned. Agency and autonomy are two things I value most. And I hate when they are taken from me.

You may think it’s about being in control, but it’s really more nuanced than that.

Control refers to influencing external outcomes.

Agency relates to your ability to make choices on your own behalf.

Autonomy refers to your freedom.

Embracing uncertainty is one way you can retain autonomy and agency when circumstances are beyond your authority.

By accepting that things change and are constantly in flux, you allow your brain the cognitive flexibility to recognize opportunities, the creativity to problem solve, and the bandwidth to adapt. These skills help you manage stress and minimize suffering.

You are not helpless.

Never forget that you do have dominion over yourself and your choices.

Resistance is futile.

When life decides it’s time for you to make a change, you can resist or you can surrender.

Resistance causes pain and discomfort. Being in resistance means you think you know better than the Creator of Grand Schemes.

We don’t. All we know is that we must be willing to take the journey and all that comes with it. The ups, the downs, the heartbreaks, and the triumphs.

I try to lean into lessons because that way, they don’t tend to repeat.

I try to be a good student so that I can move on to new lessons.

And the lessons don’t stop. There’s always something new to learn.

Lean into your life.

Learn what you need to learn.

Grow where you need to grow and let go where you need to let go.

I’m going deep.

Next Saturday morning I’ll be entering a space of deep reflection and restorative healing.

My energy is being consumed by life’s circumstances, by the demands of insurance investigators, adjusters, administrators, and estimators.

All wanting or needing something in order to help but what they don’t seem to truly understand is what I need.

But that’s ok because I know. I know what I need to navigate this and any other challenge with ease.

It requires giving yourself space, calm, stillness, and energy-building exercises and practices.

It requires being present and consciously aware.

When life is lifing, you have to go deep.

My life changed Tuesday.

All of our lives did. There was a shop fire at my other business. It was total and complete.

Fire, smoke, soot, and ash have claimed our livelihood, customers’ and building owner’s property.

We remain grateful yet exhausted emotionally and physically.

There are so many things to do to begin navigating our way through this tragedy and I am glad I have the coping skills to manage but for now I am honoring my grief.

Losing something you’ve spent almost 21 years building and nurturing is difficult to describe.

Despite the destruction I remain grateful for this challenge and apparent forced new chapter.
