Black Maternal Health Week (April 11, 2022-April 17, 2022)
To improve perinatal health outcomes, we must first challenge ourselves to research disparities and inequities that exist within the healthcare system. For black women, the healthcare system is a byproduct of systemic discriminatory practices that have unjustly stripped many women of their birthing rights. The proof is in the numbers!!! Black women are 3x more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues in comparison to non-black women. Maternal rights matter for all women, but justice must be served to black mothers, in particular, who face devastating pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum experiences. We publicly stand in support of Black mothers, some we know personally, to educate ourselves, support others, and advocate for equal birthing rights to decrease maternal and infant mortality in the Black community.
