It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Ed Holmes, a visionary leader and one of the driving forces behind the creation of Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance. Ed’s unwavering commitment and dedication laid the foundation for what has become a life-saving service - bringing rapid, advanced medical care to those who need it most, when seconds and minutes counts. Thanks to Ed, Nightingale has flown thousands of missions, saved untold lives, and continues to stand as a symbol of hope in our region. His legacy will live on in every flight, every patient cared for, and every team member who carries our mission forward. Our hearts are with Ed’s family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

We offer our deepest condolences to our friends and colleagues at Midwest Medical Transport of North Carolina (MMT) following the tragic accident that recently took the lives of two providers. Skye and Stephen gave everything in service to others and their loss is felt across the entire EMS community. To our brothers and sisters at MMT: we grieve with you, and we hold their families, friends and colleagues in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time

Camden County EMS is proud to share a story of exceptional emergency medical care that resulted in a life saved!

On the evening of August 6, 2025, Pasquotank-Camden Central Communications received a 911 call for a citizen in Camden County who had gone into sudden cardiac arrest at their home. Emergency Communication Specialists immediately dispatched first responders and Camden County EMS while providing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) instructions over the phone.

Camden County EMS crews arrived quickly and began advanced life support, working seamlessly alongside the South Camden Volunteer Fire Department and the Camden County Sheriff's Office - NC

Thanks to the rapid response, skilled care, and teamwork, the patient regained a pulse and was transported by Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where they continued receiving life-saving care.

This morning, first responders and EMS had the opportunity to meet with the patient and family. It was a powerful reminder of the impact that timely response, strong teamwork, and compassionate care can have on the lives of our citizens.

Outstanding job by everyone involved!

Nightingale

Nightingale, a service of Sentara, has flown more than 20,000 accident-free missions since the program began in 1982. Today, it is one of the signature services that sets Sentara Healthcare apart as the premier provider of hospital and health care services in this region.

Nightingale operates with a pilot, a registered nurse and a paramedic and has transported thousands of critically ill patients, flying more than 700 missions per year. From our home base at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the area’s only Level I Trauma Center, we fly a 125-mile radius handling trauma, cardiac, neurological, medical, pediatric and obstetric patients.

Nightingale provides rapid transport of the critically ill or injured, transporting patients from the scene of an accident, or from one medical facility to another. Nightingale operates as a community asset to EMS and multiple hospital systems, and is called into service when time is critical to the patient's survival and air transportation is the best method.
