We use so many abbreviations in nursing, and learning them starts in nursing school! Here are some common abbreviations relating to time. Insulin is often ACHS: before meals and bedtime.

Nursing school asks you to learn a lot all at once.

Feeling overwhelmed does not mean you are failing. Growth happens one concept and one clinical day at a time.

It's ok that you don't ace your exams. That you don't remember all the answers. That you're struggling applying a concept in clinical.

It is so important to manage all of this and your emotions in a way that works for you. Nursing school is stressful. Working as a new grad is stressful. Nursing is a lot.

I'm a huge fan of therapy. Having that safe space to talk, finding appropriate coping mechanisms. Being able to leave work at work and not ruminate over situations and decisions. I also love being able to talk to a nurse friend. Doing a post-shift debrief and meditation.

Advocacy protects you and your patients. It is a core part of nursing practice, even as a student.

Listen to your patients. Ask questions. Wait for them to answer.

Slow down. Double check. Confer with another nurse. Ask the clinician to clarify.

Speak up if you don't feel like something is right. Chart objectively. Loop in charge, house supervisor, manager.

Some things to keep in mind for external catheters, such as a purewick. While not as high risk for infection as an indwelling, they still carry a risk and proper care is important.

And just the reminder that we don't use these to make our lives as nurses easier. For patients who can safely ambulate, it is important that they do!

Writing down key tasks and priorities early in the shift can help you stay on track. Student nurses & new grads, new to unit or experienced nurses too, don't be shy asking and see what others do. It may work for you!

Nursing requires compassion but not self-sacrifice. Boundaries help you sustain your ability and capacity to care. It's important to start learning how to separate these as a nursing student so that you protect yourself as you work.
