1. Check in on each other. Seriously. Ask the question: "Are you OK?" Then listen. Then listen more. Then have a conversation.
2. You've got to talk it out. I know trusting someone with that information is profoundly difficult. But, you've got to do it. Yes, I'm talking to you.
3. The first step in easing the load you're carrying is telling someone you need help with it.

Working a holiday shift can be challenging, regardless of which holiday you celebrate. However, if you find yourself scheduled to work during the holidays this year, there are some positive aspects to consider.

For emergency responders, the anticipation of holiday scheduling can be daunting. It's important to acknowledge your feelings—whether it's grief, sadness, or anger; these emotions are completely normal. Furthermore, it’s helpful to reframe your perspective on working the holiday shift. Here are some points to consider:

1. **You Are in Good Company:** There’s something to be said for spending the holiday with colleagues who understand what you’re going through.

2. **You Are Filling a Spot for Someone Else:** It’s true that someone has to be on duty. Take a moment to reflect on why you chose this field and feel proud of your role, especially on a significant day.

3. **External Gratification:** A universal human need is to feel recognized and appreciated. Civilians celebrating the holiday often express their gratitude with heartfelt thanks and acknowledgment.

To better navigate the challenges of emergency response work and to access more free resources and information, check out YOU | ResponderStrong. It’s a free, confidential space for responders and their families to take charge of their well-being and excel both personally and professionally.
