To those of you for whom this is a sad or triggering day…

You don’t have a father that was ever present in your life; or you got one of the sh*tty ones; or you lost yours, and it’s still raw; or you and your dad are going through some sh** right now; and you’re sick of everyone wishing you a “Happy Father’s Day” and feeling bombarded by celebrations everywhere you look...

Productivity. Productivity. Productivity. We're obsessed with productivity. How can we be more productive? We all want to be more productive. (If we don't, we're probably in burnout which is a whole other thing.)

But what does this mean? What is it really about?

When we talk about productivity, what we usually mean is receipts for time. Can you account for your time? What time did you get up this morning? What do you have to show for yourself at this hour of the day? Where did the time go? Show me your receipts!

How much time do you spend worrying about having receipts for your time?

Is this how you want to live?

This is a crazy, fearful, stressful way to live and for many of us a highly de-motivating way to live.

Sometimes I unwittingly fool myself into thinking things will never be bad again, or that I won't revert to old crappy patterns. It's not a conscious thought, but that false sense of security that can come with feeling pretty good for a while. I forget nothing is permanent or guaranteed, including my own growth and progress. There will always be challenges to navigate, sometimes massive ones. Sometimes it feels like everything crumbles at once. Sometimes it doesn't feel like we're doing our best. Sometimes we feel like we don't have our "best" in us right now.

In these times, it's important to remember, these aren't things gone wrong, not in the sense they weren't supposed to happen, or that WE'VE gone wrong as people. It's all part of the life deal. Nobody ever promised us a rose garden, know what I'm saying? Expect some bad s #**. It's happening whether you fight it or not. Expect you may not always handle it the way you'd like, bc none of us is perfect.

Grab your oar and keep paddling, or pull up to the bank, climb out and punch a tree and scream. (Highly recommend some gloves in this scenario.) Lie down on a blanket and throw a raging toddler tantrum if it helps, or just go to bed and give up for now, just for now, if you can, but know you're not really giving up. It's just where you are right now. It doesn't mean you have to stay here. It doesn't mean you've failed. It doesn't mean your life will always be like this. You'll get through it. You'll figure it out. And you'll do so with more peace and grace by simply accepting it and allowing yourself to be a raging maniac or pile of mush under a blanket if that's what you need to get through it. This is the dot on the map where you are right now. There will be other dots.

For now, you're here.
Just be here.
Let all the feels bubble up.
Keep going when you can.

Always keep going.

Why do we get in stuck in situations we really don't want to be in? ...patterns we don't want to keep repeating, despite truly wanting to change?

It's the comfort of what we know and the fear of what we don't. The discomfort you know is less scary than the discomfort of facing uncertainty.

But know that there is no other side to the discomfort you already know. There is only more of it, and it never runs out. The discomfort of change, however, has a whole new life waiting for you.

How many people do you admire because they're just like everyone else?
How many inspiring stories have you heard about people doing everything by the book, the template, the norm?

Nothing remarkable or new is ever born of sameness.
