Thanks so much to everyone who came out to the Social Documentary and Zeke Magazine event at the Leica Gallery Boston yesterday! The panel discussion was really meaningful, and we had some great, thoughtful questions from the crowd. It was an amazing chance to explore the importance of social documentary work. It’s been a while since my last blog post, and I wanted to share what I’ve been up to lately. Life has been incredibly busy as I’ve been working with the and taking some time for soul-searching through travel. These experiences have brought me a lot of clarity and inspiration.
In preparation for an upcoming panel discussion with the Social Documentary Network at the Leica Gallery next week, I felt compelled to reflect on the state of documentary photography today. I’ve written a new blog post capturing my thoughts and feelings on this important topic, and I can’t wait for you to read it! You can check it out here: https://www.matildesimas.com/blog-post/the-state-of-documentary-and-photojournalism The blog post also includes a link to ‘s compelling article in about AI and the future of visual storytelling.

As I delve into the nuances of our craft and its impact, I hope to spark meaningful conversations. Thank you for your continued support.

Photo Caption: Although she is turned away from the camera, the image of a young girl in a burka hiding her face evokes deep emotion, reminding us that she is a real person with a powerful story. As she shares her experiences of exploitation as a domestic worker in the Philippines, this moment is part of the Philippines: Girls as a Commodity project. The series highlights the harsh realities faced by children sold into domestic servitude and the cybers*x trade, amplifying survivor voices as they navigate their healing journey in a long-term NGO facility, receiving psychological services, education, life skills training, legal protections, and advocacy support.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for last night's screening of 'Woman Rising.' Your presence and engagement truly made the event special. The thoughtful questions from the audience demonstrated a real eagerness to understand more about human trafficking, and it's heartening to see such care for this critical issue.

Special thanks to photojournalist Smita Sharma for sharing her important work in India, and thank you Detective Tim Farris for joining our discussion and coming from Maine. While we didn't have the chance for an artist chat with Sybylla, the enthusiasm shown only strengthens our resolve to continue raising awareness. Your questions showed real concern for human trafficking. Many were surprised it happens in Maine. This film proves it's everywhere. Your enthusiasm motivates us to keep spreading awareness together!

Visit womanrisingfilm.com to learn more about this initiative and where our next screening will take place. If you would like to discuss booking a screening in your community, please message me.

Today at the Cumberland County Courthouse, DA Jackie Saritors hosted an exceptional double screening event for "Woman Rising."

Attendees included DA staff, social service providers, and law enforcement. The aim? To foster empathy, understanding, and collaboration across all levels of our justice and support systems. Let me tell you, it was nothing short of inspiring. The screenings were not just about watching; they were about learning and connecting on a with the stories and struggles that often go unseen.

After each screening, meaningful conversations followed. DA Saritors facilitated open discussions that allowed everyone to reflect on the films and share their thoughts and feelings. These conversations were eye-opening and ranged from personal reflections to professional insights.

As I wrap up this incredible day, it's clear that the journey doesn't end here. The discussions sparked and the connections formed have the potential to lead to tangible improvements in how we work together to serve our community.

Till next time, let's all carry the spirit of today with us in our work and beyond.

This past week has been a whirlwind of emotions, reminding me of the incredible power and beauty that our Earth holds. Through this week’s ups and downs, I’ve been fortunate to find solace in the company of my Limb Kind Foundation family, including conversations that have reignited my appreciation for the world around us.

Talking to friends like Roderick Sewell Jackson we’ve shared thoughts on the wonder of the Earth and its ability to surprise and amaze us. One such place the Dead Vlei in Namibia's Namib-Naukluft National Park, a place that truly epitomizes the unexpected beauty of our planet. Standing in its ancient clay pan, surrounded by the towering orange dunes and stark, skeletal trees, I experienced a sense of vibration and calm unlike anything I've ever felt before. It was a poignant reminder of the Earth's timeless beauty and the serenity it can offer.

The past week, emotional as it was, has deepened my connection to our planet and the community of people who share this appreciation. I'm grateful for the good company and the shared moments of awe that remind us of the Earth's incredible power and beauty.

As Limb Kind Foundation’s mission in Kenya draws to a close, it's a moment of reflection and gratitude for the incredible journey we've embarked on together. Like with all life-enriching experiences, it's the people that truly make a place special. Our time in Kijabe has been transformative, not just in the work we've accomplished but in the bonds we've formed and the lives we've touched.

I'm deeply thankful to have reconnected with my friends in Kijabe, who have always shown unwavering support and warmth. Equally, the opportunity to make so many new friends has been a gift beyond measure. Each person I've met has left a lasting imprint on my heart, sharing insights and stories that have enriched my understanding and appreciation of this remarkable community.

Limb Kind's mission here may be ending, but the impact of our work and the connections we've made will continue to resonate. These friendships, new and old, are the true legacy of our time in Kenya. Thank you to everyone in Kijabe for making our mission memorable, for your hospitality, and for every moment of laughter, learning, and collaboration. I carry with me not just memories but a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to keep building bridges wherever we go next.

I'm currently packing up, getting ready to say a bittersweet goodbye to the enchanting landscapes of Iceland. This place, with its quiet majesty and breathtaking views, has been a haven of peace for me. It’s been an absolute dream.

But, the adventure must go on, and what comes next is not just another chapter in my travels, but a mission close to my heart. I'm off to East Africa! While I'm buzzing with excitement for the vibrant culture, this journey holds a deeper purpose. I'm heading to Kenya to team up with the Limb Kind Foundation.

The Limb Kind Foundation is doing incredible work in providing prostheses to the children of Kenya, transforming lives one step at a time. Their profound impact on these children's lives is nothing short of inspiring, and I'm honored to have the chance to document their stories.

As I make this transition from the tranquil embrace of Iceland's nature to the heartwarming and spirited landscapes of East Africa, I'm reminded of the beauty in both the quiet moments and the vibrant connections of human kindness.

So, here's to the next leg of my journey! I can't wait to share with you all the stories of courage, hope, and the life-changing impact of the Limb Kind Foundation's work in Kenya.

Catch you on the flip side with stories to tell and hearts to warm!
