We had a so-so gardening year (too busy raising a baby to focus on the plants) but very pleased with our potato harvest. We only planted one row but got over a pound per foot! How did your summer go? Let us know!

Hello, friends! As most of you know, GIY Chicago is not my full time job. It’s a hobby and a passion project - a way to connect with my neighbors while also bonding with nature. I’ve loved slowly growing my (still admittedly tiny) business and meeting all of you. Last year I grew over 1000 seedlings, all by hand in my basement and backyard. Like many of you, I spend the dreary Chicago winters dreaming of gardening season, so it brings me a mix of joy and sadness to tell you I won’t be selling seedlings this year.

I just had major surgery and will be recovering for a while and finally had to accept that I won’t be able to handle the physical demands of seed starting. The happy news is that my spouse and I are expecting our first child in May. I’m very excited to be a parent and want to focus all of my energy on our tiny human.

Of course, I can’t completely skip the season. My spouse and I will be gardening in our yard, and I made sure to start extra seedlings for local community gardens and schools. I may decide to grow a round of seedlings for fall - I’ll be sure to keep you posted. :)

Thank you so much for choosing to be my customer. I hope you all have a fantastic gardening season. Shop small, grow big, and I’ll see you in 2023!

It’s a neat feeling to harvest fresh greens while there’s snow on the ground. Pea shoots are very easy to grow - all you need is a bit of potting mix or a mat, water, and a grow light or a sunny spot - and the peas of course. :)

What’s your favorite green tomato recipe? We love but you can only eat so many. My faves so far are green tomato mincemeat and green tomato bread, which is similar to zucchini bread.

So excited for my first ginger harvest! This is about 1/5 of what I grew. I was debating picking the rest but I read today that ginger is cold hardy to 20 degrees F - who knew?! I’ll dig up the rest in a couple of weeks.

The coolest part? This was all container grown. Based on advice from , I planted my ginger in a big shallow container. Ginger needs space but not depth.

This was a trial run to see if it would be worth selling ginger starts next year and I’m gonna say HECK YEAH. I’ll be taking preorders for Spring 2022 in December, so make sure to sign up for my mailing list at giychicago.com for news!

It’s pesto time! We harvested a huge basil crop this year. This year we interplanted almost all of our basil with our tomatoes. The scent of the basil kept pests off the tomatoes, the tomatoes gave the basil much needed shade, and we (and a few lucky friends) get pesto all winter long. Everyone wins!
