No musical phenomenon has had such a profound impact on me artistically, musically and culturally as the Grateful Dead. They were a force that altered my life's trajectory in the most positive and meaningful way. Their timing in my life was perfect. That awkward transition from teenage years into adulthood suddenly had a soundtrack and a community.

The official statement on Bob's passing stated it all perfectly.
"His work did more than fill rooms with music; it was warm sunlight that filled the soul, building a community, a language, and a feeling of family that generations of fans carry with them. Every chord he played, every word he sang was an integral part of the stories he wove. There was an invitation: to feel, to question, to wander, and to belong,”

The photographs you see here I made between 1986 and 1997, spanning places and moments from Albany to Alpine Valley, Buffalo to Berkeley and many times travelling from Canada to California, years in which the band’s music became inseparable from the way I saw, heard, and made sense of the world.

You'll be missed, Bobby. 😢💔

The finish line is suddenly in sight. Tomorrow at Liss Gallery, we’ll be holding the closing reception for my exhibition, with gatherings from 1–3 p.m. and again from 6–9 p.m.

If you’re free, c'mon by. And if you missed the opening, this is a relaxed chance to wander through the work, ask questions, or share a few stories of your own. I’ll be there for both sessions, always happy to talk rock ’n’ roll, photography, and the moments behind the images.

Hope you can drop by and say hello.

Here’s something truly special. Maybe you're looking for a unique Christmas gift?

Dean Pickup — an Edmonton-based artist and book designer whose award-winning work appears on more than 200 published book covers — recently created a charcoal drawing of Gord Downie based on one of my photographs from The Tragically Hip’s In Violet Light tour stop in Montreal on October 11, 2002.

His interpretation is remarkable. The precision, the shading, the way he handles shadow… it’s astonishing. Scroll to see my original.

Dean, I’m grateful you chose this moment to work from. It's an honour.

Dean has released limited edition prints of the piece, titled “Will & Determination.”
They’re now available in person or through his website: DeanPickup.com

Each print is signed, numbered, and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
Price: $150 unframed
Local framing available for $75

A portion of proceeds will be donated to Amy’s House Cancer Charity in Edmonton — a meaningful and generous gesture that speaks to the heart behind his work.

If you appreciate thoughtful, beautifully crafted art, take a moment to explore what Dean creates. He deserves every follow, every share, and every bit of support. Please feel very encouraged to share this post!

Thank you, Dean.

Photographing John Legend this past Thursday night was something special. The lighting played beautifully off him, and he looked absolutely great on camera. His tour is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album Get Lifted. He’s not just a name, he really lives up to being a legend.

🎉 Happy 80th birthday to Neil Young — one of the true originals.

This shot was captured on October 11 1986 at Cobo Arena in Detroit, during the In a Rusted Out Garage tour.

It was only the second major concert I ever photographed — so it holds a special place in my journey. I was already a huge fan of Neil’s music, and as a 19 year old witnessing that raw, wild energy from the stage secured me as a life long supporter.

Fast forward 39 years and I saw him again this past summer. Neil still knows how to deliver an unforgettable show.

Here’s to many more years of creativity, boldness, and the songs that continue to resonate. Thanks, Neil. 🎸

On our last day in NYC, I had a surprise for the students — Roosevelt Island and the Tramway. None of them knew what we were doing until they spotted the tram gliding overhead. Floating above the East River felt almost cinematic, and when we arrived, the sky erupted into the best sunset of the week. I couldn’t decide whether to photograph the horizon or its reflection on the buildings — so I tried to do both before it disappeared.

On the island, we came across Ai Weiwei’s Camouflage — a striking mix of pattern and protest. Once pristine, it’s now a little tattered from the wind, its wear only deepening its message of endurance and resistance. The work nods to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms speech — freedom of speech, worship, want, and fear — ideals that still resonate today.

Quietly set between Manhattan and Queens, Roosevelt Island offers one of the city’s most peaceful perspectives — a brief escape suspended between the river and the rush.

Part of yesterday’s visual field study:

• A cloud curling beside the torch of Statue of Liberty, momentarily resembling smoke.
• The path leading up to the Manhattan Bridge.
• Last night’s full moon rising beside one of its massive columns.
• The coins gathered in the trough beside the ferry ramp on Liberty Island.
• Tree-cast shadows on a wall. Nature’s quiet imprint on urban form.

This is all part of our ongoing work with the photography program at Lambton College—using the city as our classroom, the bridges, light, and sky as our tools.

Three panoramic views of Central Park — an aerial from the top of Rockefeller Center, and two from our walk through its winding paths. This 843-acre green oasis stretches 2.5 miles north-south (from 59th to 110th Street) and about half a mile wide in Manhattan.

The first photo shows the charming stone Gapstow bridge.

It was a fantastic outing with the photography program students—so glad to have shared the walk, the frames, and the light with the group.
