I need some group good vibes for tomorrow: Tomorrow might possibly be the most difficult 10 km of my life. I promised myself a run before the emotional roller coaster I’m about to put myself through. Tomorrow is my wife’s memorial service. I am already a mess.

I finally got up and did an easy 10 km this morning. I finally had a nice mental component to it today as well. I know I need to set realistic goals so I’m bringing back my Saturday run-walk WaWa 5/10 km. No one showed up in the past but it got me out of bed. I hope your goals are going well.

Didn’t run this morning…too much tossing & turning last night. I will try tomorrow AM. I need the accountability guys or I’ll blow off the entire week in a ball of depression.

This is sadly true for me at most of my races.

So I lamed out of running yesterday…but…I did run the same 5 miler this AM. My mind was a little better.

I found a perfectly intact vulture feather and ran with it 3 miles without messing it up. Lots of Caribbean cultures, including my wife’s, find powerful symbolism in them including cleansing/renewal. So there’s that going for me.

I will do my best to not lame out and actually run Saturday AM. At least a 10km. I need my strength…I’m going to UCF Saturday. I will be sitting by myself at a rugby match. I know it sounds sad, but it is a first step for me.

Hope your goals are going well.

My daughter convinced me to get out and run yesterday. It had been 17 days since my last run…I have a strange physiology with my heart condition. It absolutely talks to me and I know exactly when it is time to get back and run as it tightens too much.

I won’t lie to you guys. It sucked. I did a lazy 5 miler on muscle memory alone. My brain was on constant stress & worry. I had 0 brain calm. I didn’t even enjoy the pre-dawn scenery.

But 50% of run benefits is better than 0%. I will try again tomorrow (Wednesday). I am going to force myself on imagining do I run the Savannah 1/2 in November (new to me) or Key West 1/2 in January (my favorite). Both have pro’s/con’s.

I hope you all are keeping your fitness goals up.

Guys I’m just going to say it….my wife died Sunday unexpectedly. I am going through a ton of trauma right now. I am going to be off this page for quite some time. By all means post your fitness goals just know I won’t be on here for awhile.

1,000 miles in 2026

That is my #1 fitness goal for this year. Every time I attempt to do it I get a few months in and it falls apart. Injury/illness, summer heat, work-life imbalance, all sorts of reasons pile up.

1,000 sounds realistic…not quite 3 10 kms per week. But it is for every week.

So far in 2026 I’m slightly above pace. What do you think? Anyone else have a similar fitness goal for 2026?

02/14/2026

Yesterday AM I did a nice Welcome Back to the neighborhood 8.5 miler. My first run since St. Pete. I went old school with no interval timer and no concerns about what Zone I was in. I let my body decide the run/walk time and pace. Felt great. Too foggy to see the rocket launch.

How are your fitness goals going? You can now post (see last week’s post on how). Can’t wait to see what’s coming up for you all. I only know of Shyla’s exciting Gasparilla 1/2. I’ll post my ambitious 2026 goal tomorrow.

Been 48 hours since I said goodbye to a wonderful St. Pete venue and lots to think about. After the initial wave of hell-pain went away Monday I was able to sneak a few hours with my daughter at UCF. Always a great reminder of life’s priorities. Today I stayed home and had a tremendous burst of energy so I finally gave the tropical jungle in my front yard some well deserved pruning (seriously, is there anything more diabolical than an out of control bouganvillea? The devil’s plant!).

I have done some physiology research on why I can’t get under 6 hours in a marathon. At 6’3” 255 lbs. I literally would have to lose 25 pounds to do that. That is a lot to ask my body to do at 53. And honestly i’m not willing to give up beer and real food for that. But…on a positive note, I felt absolutely fine running a 3 hour 1/2 marathon. Almost like it was too good to be true. So, before my current level of fitness goes to s**t of course I’m thinking of squeezing in a 1/2 before the summer heat grinds it to a halt!

Before I put a bittersweet goodbye to marathon weekend I just want to say thank you to everyone on this page for putting up with my musings and memes. Huge thank yous to Megan, Joele, and Jonathan for keeping me alive!

Hope your 2026 training is going well. If not it’s not too late to change your plan!
