Multicultural Health Institute (MHI) Improving health & wellness issues & reducing health disparities

In the mid-nineties, Dr. Lisa Merritt was working as a physician with a patient roster that was racially and ethnically diverse. She observed major differences in the rates of certain diseases and treatment of people from certain racial and socio-economic subgroups under her care. In order to help resolve some of those differences, Dr. Merritt founded the Multicultural Health Institute in 1995 in

Sacramento, California. She recruited a group of doctors and community advocates to work with the Institute to initiate programs and authored a number of papers for medical journals focused on treatment and patient care. The Advocacy work that began in California by the original staff and directors of MHI expanded to service Atlanta, Georgia in 2000. MHI relocated its headquarters to Sarasota, Florida in 2006, where it continues to support government entities, non-profit organizations and community based initiatives through its programs and research.

City residents interested in participating in the Neighborhood Canopy Program have until August 22 to register for the fall planting cycle.

The program provides professional installation of 2-inch caliper trees at the front of a resident's property, contributing to their community's urban canopy. Participants will pay $100 for the tree, with the City covering the remainder of the cost up to $500 for the selected tree, funded by the City’s Tree Mitigation Fund.

Participants can choose from 10 canopy tree options:

- magnolia
- shady lady
- Southern red cedar
- Japanese blueberry
- winged elm
- live oak
- green buttonwood
- royal poinciana
- ligustrum
- sycamore

Reminder: The Neighborhood Canopy Program is for City of Sarasota residents only. Don't miss out on this opportunity to get a low-cost canopy tree!

Contact NeighborhoodCanopyProgram@sarasotafl.gov to register.
