Join us at noon ET today, Friday, January 12th, for “Anatomy of a Chronic Illness: The Biology of How We Get Sick (and how to get well)!”

We’ll break down the biology of the role Autonomic Nervous System dysregulation plays in shifting the body away from healing and repair and toward increasing symptoms and illness.

To watch today (or in the future!) simply go to our page or YouTube channel at noon, Eastern Time.

See you there!

Why (and how) does our approach work – even for people who have tried everything without success? Come learn more about OCC and our pioneering approach to healthcare in our upcoming Live Q&A Series!
The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is the master lever that controls our physiology. People come to us struggling with an assortment of issues in both the physical and mental/emotional/behavioral health realms.
Fatigue, anxiety, depression, tinnitus, high blood pressure, PTSD, brain fog, chronic stress, autoimmunity, overwhelm, vertigo, insecurity, MCAS, shame, loneliness, chronic Lyme, fear, ADHD, procrastination, migraines, perfectionism, pain, addiction, codependency, gut problems, POTS, Long Haul Covid – these conditions, and many more, are all physiologic in nature and governed by the ANS.

One can attempt to treat the symptoms of any one of these issues, but true healing – healing that addresses the underlying cause of these conditions – requires neuroregulation of the organs. This approach is the future of medicine, and it’s what we do here at Origins Collaborative Care.

Last week we had the amazing opportunity to meet Stephen Porges and Deb Dana at the Polyvagal Institute’s Legacy Talks in Florida. We want to share the highlights of this experience with our OCC Tribe – we have gotten to this special moment because of the support and love from all of you!

We’re thrilled to have made so many heartfelt connections with the larger PVI community! The conference ended with a panel discussion, “The Future of Polyvagal Theory,” in which Dr. Porges outlined his hope that the field of medicine will come to understand that all human health is dependent on the neuroregulation of the organs – meaning that the ANS needs to detect enough safety to allocate energy toward health, growth, and restoration (rather than protection/defense). He went on to explain that allopathic medicine’s attempts to address the predictable consequences of disrupted neuroregulation of the organs (i.e., chronic states of protection/ANS dysregulation) through medication and surgical interventions are misguided, and will result in new symptoms/dysfunction appearing elsewhere UNTIL the Autonomic Nervous System has been re-tuned toward flexible patterns that include enough Ventral Vagal influence to allow the body to heal, repair and function optimally.

It was profoundly affirming to have Stephen Porges validate that OCC’s approach (including minimal laboratory testing and a primary focus on building ANS resilience) IS the path out of illness and into health. He also shares our philosophy that ANS dysregulation is the underlying root cause of dis-ease and that our bodies CAN and WILL heal once ANS regulation is restored.
OCC is at the forefront of applying Polyvagal Theory in clinical practice!
We'll be breaking down the science and what it means for you or your loved one TODAY, November 17th at Noon ET for a Facebook Live Stream Conversation.

Another Jess answer to a Live Stream question!
Question - How do you approach preparing for menopause from the functional medicine perspective?
Jess's answer:
as you are aware, OCC works with folks who have complex health conditions, so we don't consider perimenopause and menopause in a vacuum! Considering all the hormonal influences (cortisol, thyroid, insulin, s*x hormones, etc) in a chronic inflammatory setting is important. Because one of our goals is to prevent more illness from developing in the future, I believe it's important to consider all the important roles estradiol plays in a healthy body (brain, blood vessels, skin, mast cells, bone, va**na, etc.). With this in mind, in the absence of estrogen-receptor positive tumors, I encourage people to consider use of bioidentical hormones in menopause to support the body functioning predictably. Of course, that is within the context of considering the detox pathways for our hormones (and personalizing with genetic info when available!), our ANS regulation work, and symptoms associated with the fluctuating hormone levels, so there's not a blanket recommendation I use. Happy to answer more specific questions in a Discovery Call with us!

On Friday, we got asked a question that Jessica - who couldn't join us - has a more nuanced and specific response to!
The question was: Do you evaluate for retained primitive reflexes or hemispheric imbalance as part of the nervous system regulation program?
Here's Jess's answer:
As my colleagues mentioned, OCC certainly believes in making the most of our 20% efferent vagal fibers, but we understand and capitalize on the 80% afferent vagal fibers that make a body-up approach necessary for our Members. While we don't do any testing for hemispheric imbalance or retained primitive reflexes, I understand that the origin of such issues likely resides in having a lot of dorsal vagal activation for survival on board. We understand that employing dorsal vagal survival strategies once served each of our Members very well, but it is generally not highly adaptive any longer, and is often a significant part of what is inhibiting the healing each of our Members is seeking. The ways we help our Members build autonomic flexibility during their memberships optimize people's healing capacity and trajectory, and it is my belief that there would not be much, if any, added benefit to having those test results as part of our program. Thanks for asking!
