COVID VACCINE UPDATES

This fall has gotten off to a challenging start as we experienced a significant delay in our ability to order Covid vaccines from the state. We have heard from many of you about your concerns regarding not being able to get this protection for your child and share in your frustration at this situation. Fortunately, last week, the state immunization portal finally opened Covid vaccine ordering for children ages 6 months and older and NAP submitted the order for these vaccines that same day. We now have a limited supply of Moderna brand Covid vaccines (Spikevax) in each office and have started offering these at routine well visit and follow up appointments.

You may recall that we had offered Pfizer brand Covid vaccines in past years. We have made the decision to change to Moderna at this time as Pfizer no longer has an approved product for young children. There is good guidance through the AAP about how to transition children from Pfizer to Moderna if they are in the middle of their primary series.

We are working hard to find ways to offer additional nurse visits and vaccine clinics to children under age 5 who cannot receive a Covid vaccine elsewhere. Due to ongoing short staffing challenges and the increase in visit volume with the start of sick season, we are limited in the number of additional hours our incredibly dedicated nursing staff is able to provide to accommodate patients wanting to get their Covid vaccine at NAP. For this reason, if your child is 5 years of age or older, we are asking that you schedule their Covid vaccine at a local pharmacy so that the limited vaccine appointments NAP is able to offer are reserved for those children who do not have this option. Further, if you are in the office for a routine visit and due for vaccines, please get your vaccines at that time and not rely on our already limited nurse visits to come back another day.

It appears that select CVS pharmacies, specifically the CVS Minute Clinic on University Drive in Amherst but likely other Minute Clinics as well, can give Covid vaccines as young as 18 months! Also, the Northampton Department of Public Health is hosting flu vaccine clinics for ages 6 months and older every week. Please check their site at NorthamptonMA.gov for times and locations.

We hope everyone is having a nice start to the school year and enjoying fun fall festivities while this beautiful weather lasts!
