Stem spotlight--first in a series!

This is Nigella! It is also called Love in a Mist--how romantic! Pale blue flowers in an airy cloud of wispy foliage. It also comes in white, pink, dark blue/purple, and yellow. We mainly grow the pale blue variety as it is the most popular and versatile. Once the petals drop, the plants form beautiful balloon-like pods that are useful as a textural element.

The stems are branchy and wispy. In my experience, it can give a lot of bulk to a bouquet or arrangement. Flowers are surprisingly long lasting for such a delicate looking plant--7+ days. They do shatter once their time is done. This flower can do ok in boutonnieres or corsages as long as it is properly hydrated up until wear. Flowers that are almost open at harvest will continue to open, though they may not be as vibrantly colored. Stems may have a mix of opened flowers, unopened flowers, and even pods on the same stem. The pods can be used fresh or dried.

Let me know if you have any questions about this beautiful flower!

We always seem to go through a period of time where it warms and then goes back to cold. Last night was a chilly one! Thankfully any thing I had planted was under frost protection so it should be just fine. Hoping we can get more things planted out today, now that it is warmer!

Snapdragons, clematis, and bells of Ireland can be found in our spring and June bouquet subscriptions!

Celosia are the quirky, odd, textural backup singers to our late summer arrangements. I love them! These are a few of the varieties we are growing this year.

🥳I am so excited about something we are exclusively offering this year! I have never heard of any flower farmer being able to source these. I was looking for unique seeds and I came across these seeds on Etsy, from a flower breeder in Europe. Wow! Those blooms are stunning. I snatched them up and am growing a whole field of them for my Northfield, Lonsdale, Lakeville, and Little Chicago friends! They came up great and look so different than what I expected. Maybe you guys can help me out by looking at the plant that came up (2nd picture) and tell me if it looks right to you. I'm sure it is as I got them from a reputable source!

These blooms can be found in our April 1st Bouquet Subscription! Yay!😉

I was out checking on our tulips yesterday (only one variety poking up so far, but I carefully dug down in the soil and found more sprouting!), and that made me look again at the varieties we are growing this year. I thought I'd share photos of a few of the varieties with you! I am really excited about our lineup this year for spring subscriptions!!

So happy to have our first plants planted this year! Our cold tolerant annuals are the first to get in the ground. We have about half of our ranunculus planted. Hopefully more will get in the ground today!

Just like painting… the prep is the hardest. Once we get to the planting part, I am so happy!

One of the things I enjoy about growing flowers is trying new varieties every year. It brings back some of that fun and excitement that led me into growing flowers on a large scale. Growing flowers is a huge amount of physical work, and I have experienced burnout almost every year at some point of the season. Experimenting with new kinds really helps keep me going!
This year, among a few other things, I am trying out these flowers called lavatera. They remind me of hibiscus flowers and strawberry ice cream! We will see if they are a dud or a winner at my farm. I have heard they are great as cut flowers, but time will tell if they are worth growing in my conditions and soil!

Flowers don't happen by accident! It takes some digging in the dirt first. Have a beautiful day!

Behind the scenes lately...

🌷Planting seeds that will give us June and July blooms. I ran out of grow lights so I need to get some things planted. I hope the ground dries up a little soon, as it is pure mud out there right now!

☀️Working on the hoophouse project. It will be done soon!

🌿Pruning shrubs that give us beautiful stems, such as hydrangea and ninebark!

💻Lots of administrative work. Not my favorite, but it must happen! Ordering supplies for the season, website work, letting everyone know about our flowers via emails and posts, answering emails from all of you!

💧Watering, fertilizing, transplanting the baby plants as they grow.

🤔Planning, planning, planning!

And life 😆😆😆

Have a great Monday!!!
