Life has its challenges and sometimes things may not go the way we would have liked or how we hoped. One question that could be asked is not why are people bitter, but how could they not be? Because hard times and disappointments are a part of the experience of life. The thing is, bitterness is often a way to cope and it can help us to close off and make excuses in the moment so that we don’t have to take full responsibility for our part in our situation, but at the same time bitterness keeps us exactly where we are. Right now, in this moment… reflect on something you may be bitter about, realize it’s ok, we aren’t looking at the feeling of bitterness from a place of judgement, rather from genuine curiosity. In this moment, ask the feeling of bitterness, from a place of compassion and empathy towards that feeling, what it’s been trying to protect you from? Listen to that feeling, allow it to be heard. Now, ask the feeling of bitterness how it feels about transforming from the feeling of being bitter into the feeling of doing better. What does that look like? What would that require? What are things that feeling could do, to go from bitter to better? Simply ask, from a place of genuine caring and see what comes up…
