Breaking news: A study published in Nature Medicine reveals just how devastating sugar-sweetened beverages are to our health and economy.
Each year in the U.S., these drinks are responsible for:
• 27,000 deaths from diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
• 300,000 new cases of diabetes.
• 67,000 new cases of CVD.
Here’s what that looks like:
• 25,000 Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every single month just from sugary drinks.
On average, each person with diabetes adds $12,000 in annual healthcare costs.
That’s $3.6 BILLION a year in extra health spending—caused by something entirely preventable. We cannot ignore this any longer. It’s time for systemic change.
If we want to reverse the trajectory of chronic disease and skyrocketing healthcare costs, we must address the root cause. And sugar-sweetened beverages are a massive piece of the puzzle.
