As a healthcare professional committed to advancing whole-person care, I’ve seen firsthand how mental health profoundly influences physical health outcomes. Behavioral Health Integration (BHI) isn’t just a policy initiative—it’s a critical strategy to close care gaps, improve chronic disease management, and reduce avoidable costs. In this post, I’ll share why BHI must be a priority in every primary care setting—and how we can lead that transformation together.

Less than a decade ago, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced Behavioral Health Integration (BHI) within primary care settings. Since then, it’s become increasingly clear that integrating behavioral health is not just a policy initiative—it’s imperative to providing com...

👀 March is Save Your Vision Month👀

Spending just two hours a day in front of a screen can lead to dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, and back or neck pain. To combat, the American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends:

- Getting annual eye exams
- Resting your eyes for 15 minutes after 2 hours of continuous device use
- Blinking frequently to minimize the chances of developing dry eye
- Setting up an ergonomic workspace by angling your computer so it is properly distanced from your eyes.

At Prime Clinical Associates, we support the eye health of our employees and our patients. Contact us today to learn more about our new technologies in vision care.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) is the leading professional organization for doctors of optometry, optometry students and paraoptometric staff, offering advocacy, professional development and practice management tools.

November is COPD Awareness Month

Take a deep breath. Now ask yourself: When was the last time you thought about breathing? For those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), breathing is often a challenge that worsens over time. Although there is no cure, experts from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) recommend these strategies to protect lung health at every age.

Younger Adults: Prevention is Key
COPD is less common in younger adults, but it's important to protect your lungs early. The best prevention is not smoking, as 75% of people with COPD have a history of smoking. Other risks include secondhand smoke, air pollution, and occupational exposures. If you have a family history of COPD or symptoms, consider testing for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, a genetic risk factor.

Middle-Aged Adults: Know the Symptoms and Seek Help
Symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and fatigue often appear after age 40. These symptoms are not just signs of aging. Discuss your symptoms, smoking history, and exposure to lung irritants with your healthcare provider. If needed, they may recommend testing.

Older Adults: Take Steps to Manage COPD
Older adults face higher risks. If diagnosed, follow your treatment plan and consider lifestyle changes like pulmonary rehabilitation. Staying current on vaccinations and quitting smoking can also help manage COPD.

Take proactive steps at every stage of life to protect your lung health. At any age, taking care of your lungs is crucial. Learn about COPD from Learn More Breathe Better® at https://zurl.co/eeSA.

During this festive week, it's important to keep your little ones safe while they enjoy trick-or-treating. Here are some safety tips from the Maryland State Agency News:

- Choose bright, reflective costumes and ensure they are short to avoid tripping. Masks should allow clear vision.
- Add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags for better visibility.
- Use flame-resistant costumes, wigs, and props. When crafting costumes, select materials that won't easily ignite.
- Give children flashlights for lighting or as part of their costumes.
- Opt for flashlights or glow sticks instead of candles when decorating walkways or yards for safer trick-or-treating.
- Keep exits free of decorations to ensure clear escape routes.
- Teach children to avoid open flames and know how to stop, drop, and roll if their clothing catches fire.
- Remind children attending parties to locate exits in case of emergencies.
- Avoid overloading electrical outlets or using too many extension cords, as they may overheat or become tripping hazards.
- Always supervise children while trick-or-treating.
- If walking with pets, use leashes with reflective material.
- Consider battery-operated candles instead of real ones to reduce fire risks inside the home.
- Replace damaged electrical cords and limit the use of extension cords to avoid overloading circuits.
-Check all candy first before allowing children to eat.
-Inform you local poice department if you find any candy or treats that have been tampered with. Call 911 for emergencies.

Lastly, make sure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to prevent injury or death from fires and carbon monoxide.

Quality measures are tools used to assess healthcare processes, outcomes, patient experiences, and organizational systems, all aimed at ensuring high-quality care. These measures support key healthcare goals, such as effectiveness, safety, efficiency, patient-centeredness, equity, and timeliness.

At Prime Clinical Associates, we prioritize a selected group of electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs) to close gaps in care. Our commitment includes training providers and staff to adhere to eCQM guidelines for administration, monitoring, follow-up, and documentation. Additionally, our team is proficient in optimizing electronic health records (EHRs) to efficiently filter the data required to meet these measures.

Mental health conditions impact not only those who experience them but also their friends, family, and coworkers. In the U.S., one in five adults faces a mental health condition each year, affecting their loved ones as well.

Since 1990, the first full week of October has been recognized as Mental Illness Awareness Week, thanks to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). This year, it runs from October 6 to 12, with World Mental Health Day on October 10.

Let’s prioritize our well-being and seek help when needed. For more information, download the NAMI toolkit: https://zurl.co/NBOL
