Happy Pride Month! Here’s your annual reminder that queerness is natural in many species, not just our own.

At the Liberatory Wellness Network, we don’t separate healing from history. We know mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum - it exists in systems: carceral systems, colonial systems, white supremacist systems, ableist systems.

This reading list is for those of you unlearning the lie that healing has to come from a license. It’s for the community care workers, the therapists trying to divest from harmful training, the folks doing harm reduction on the ground, the survivors who know, and the people trying to figure out where their role fits in all this.

These texts challenge psychiatry, uplift community wisdom, and offer frameworks rooted in disability justice, abolition, and decolonial practice.

This list isn’t exhaustive, but it’s a place to begin or come back to. To disrupt, remember, and rebuild.

Drop your favorite radical mental health text below.

We learn in community. Always.

I am offering two workshops:

Neuroqueering Shame in Our Creative Lives
Sunday 18 May

Creating in Spiral Time
Sunday 25 May

See first comments and link in bio for more information!

Slowing down to get things done: the paradox of neuroemergent* time
*aka non-normative neurotypes

Neuroemergent Time can be viewed as an elliptical orbit.

Things speed up during parts of this orbit, but they necessarily slow down during the rest of it.

In neuroemergent time, there are the “getting s**t done” phases of the orbit,
periods of intense concentration, energy, & productivity.

In neuroemergent time, there are also necessarily the “spinning out in space gathering stardust” phases of the spiral orbit, periods of stillness, of staring out windows, of diving down rabbit holes.

You may feel like you only ever experience the “spinning out in space gathering stardust” part of this spiral orbit. In fact, you may call that “Executive Dysfunction.”

That is because you have been so shamed about the slow, still parts of your spiral through time, that your “getting s**t done” phase of the orbit has been artificially disabled.

That shame is a political tool that has been used to wrench you back into conformity with neuronormative expectations about time and productivity.

When you have not been able to conform, on account of your neurodivergent differences, the dysfunction that shame causes is then turned back on you and treated as a symptom of your “pathology.”

You may feel a lot of grief about “lost time,” “wasted time,” “missed opportunities,” and a lot of shame about former special interestst and abandoned projects.

But when we start to understand time differently, and we begin to resist the shame that is imposed on us, we can spiral back around and revisit the past, where nothing is ever lost, wasted, or abandoned.

We can begin to compost all that shame and grow gardens in it from the seeds sprinkled out there in space like stardust.

We can find threads that we can pull through our whole lives in ways that give them shape and meaning and coherence.

We can heal our broken hearts.

Connect with like-minded individuals and gain valuable tools to help you navigate uncertainty, foster self-regulation, and promote well-being in a safe and affirming space. Join us in celebrating and uplifting our vibrant community through the healing power of resilience.

You don’t need to be “okay” right now (I’m not).

Your body knows something is wrong ⚠️

It is correct.

Emotional dysregulation is embodied communication. Our bodies are not meant to be silent in times of g*n*c*des, f*sc*sm, environmental collapse 🌍

Grief, rage, fear, overwhelm are signals. Our system is speaking - “Something here matters. Something important is happening - can you feel it?”

We carry stories inside our nervous systems - stories of survival, displacement, resistance. Our stories speak through our bodies. They recognize the horrors of the present moment. They are talking back to the pain of the present day 🧬

Emotional pain doesn’t mean we are broken - it means we remember. Grief, rage, fear, overwhelm are signs our bodies are still in relationship - with history, with lineage, with hope ✨, with each other, with the land 🌱

When the waves of feeling come, let them remind us that we are still alive - still attuned, still affected by the world around us. We are still human in dehumanizing conditions 🫀

Let the waves of feeling move you into action. Move with them, not against them. Let the grief and the pain move through you - not harden inside you 🌊

Life brings us more than we can feel alone. It’s meant to be held, felt, lived, together 🤝

Strong relationships build strong liberation movements -

Join us for the ✨Apology Essentials Workshop ✨

We’ll learn how to -

✨give an authentic apology
✨while staying connected to your body
✨and rebuilding broken trust

Take this workshop with your friends, room mates, collaborators and lovers!

Join in live on zoom or tune into the recording 📼

We will be learning through the lense of transformative justice 🌀 and prison abolition⛓️‍💥, using tools inspired by Creative Interventions, Generative Somatics and Qi Gong (a Chinese cultural technology).
