“In Denmark, empathy is part of the curriculum. Since 1993, children aged 6 to 16 have taken weekly classes designed to build compassion, cooperation, and emotional understanding. These lessons encourage students to share feelings, listen deeply, and support peers skills that research shows reduce bullying and improve social connection. By teaching empathy alongside academics, Denmark has cultivated a generation that values kindness and community. The result is one of the world’s most compassionate societies, where children learn that emotional intelligence is as vital as intellectual growth.”

Clinician Spotlight:
Meet:
Ciara McGlynn, M.S., CCC-SLP
Speech-Language Pathologist at KidsConnect Pediatric Therapy
I became a speech therapist because...
I have always been drawn to the various ways we communicate with each other and learn from each other— not only speaking and listening, but also writing and reading, creating art, passing down songs and stories, and sharing cultural traditions. Being a speech-language pathologist lets me explore the importance of communication and provide support to children and families that can carry over into all areas of their lives. It’s an incredibly rewarding profession that keeps me constantly learning.

I get excited talking about...
AAC! Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is an umbrella term that describes any way we communicate aside from verbal speech (talking). Some tools are simple, such as visual picture boards of useful words printed on paper. Others are high-tech and dynamic, offering robust vocabulary and the ability to express infinite ideas, like a specialized speech generating device (SGD). The research in our field shows how AAC can help support everyone’s communication, especially those with communication needs. AAC is shown to help both understanding of language and language expression. Research shows that using AAC can help the progression of verbal speech, not hinder it! I have worked with many clients who have benefited from using AAC for a short amount of time, and now use verbal speech as their primary mode of communication. Other clients use a multimodal or total communication approach, utilizing both their body (speech, gestures/signs, facial expression, etc) and AAC to communicate. If this sounds like something that might benefit your child, please reach out to the clinic for more information!

My favorite toys to use in therapy are...
Anything that opens and closes! There is something so exciting about the “surprise” of opening something, whether it be a little box, a house with doors and windows, a toy egg, a basket, or a mystery bag. Not to mention all the excellent early language concepts that can be addressed: hello & goodbye; open & close; in & out; my turn/your turn; describing colors, shapes, or numbers; matching; problem solving; making predictions; sorting into groups… the list goes on and on!
The great thing about language is that it is EVERYWHERE. You don’t have to search far for opportunities to model and use language. Chat with your children about the sights and smells at the grocery store as you do your shopping. Talk about body parts and clothing items during bath time or while getting dressed in the morning. Sing songs and read books with your kids! Making connections between yourself, your child, and the world around you is a simple —and free— way to help communication blossom.

Clinician Spotlight:
Meet:
Charlotte Donoho, M.S., CCC-SLP
Speech Therapist at KidsConnect Pediatric Therapy

- Why you wanted to become a speech therapist?
I wanted to combine my desire to help others with my love of language and learning.

- When it comes to speech what do you get excited to talk about?
It’s definitely the Gestalt Language Processing! Learning about Gestalt Language Processing through Meaningful Speech has greatly changed my approach to working with many of my Autistic clients. Gestalt Language Processors (GLPs) start learning language as intonationally defined units of language tied to meaningful experiences. These words, phrases, or sentences are called “gestalts” or “scripts”. For example, a child who loves Bluey might say “This episode of Bluey’s called Keepy Uppy” upon seeing a balloon. These whole units of language can be broken down into smaller chunks and then into single words. Children in the later stages of Gestalt Language Processing can combine single, freed words into self-generated sentences.

Rather than working on “teaching” language to my GLPs, I have shifted to a more child-led approach in which I support language development. This looks like modeling language without the expectation that a client will imitate me, narrating and commenting on motivating and meaningful activities, and creating opportunities for spontaneous communication by following the client’s lead. It has been so rewarding to see the positive impact that this approach has had on the language development of my GLPs!

- What are your favorite toys/tools to use in therapy?
Our clinic dollhouse and Candy Land. I love using the doll house in sessions with GLPs because there are so many opportunities for modeling language around familiar household routines (e.g., “Time to take a bath” and “I’m ready for bed!.). Candy Land can be used to work on a variety of skills. For example, one of my clients this week worked on following directions with colors and numbers. Another one of my clients and I discussed the pros and cons of living in each Candy Land board locations (e.g., Chocolate Mountain and Ice Cream Slopes).
