Bringing a vision to fruition isnt easy….

Anyone who tries to sale you the notion that making your dreams come true is easy…is literally trying to sale to you. What i will say is that it’s so so so worth it!! This is such a dream come true and I’ve been giving it my ALL!!!

It’s been over a decade since i first visited . I was at a point in my journey where i was so close to being a midwife but had no clue how to get there. I had been in an apprenticeship with a homebirth midwife for a few years, had spent a year studying at a birth center in Ghana, and was a busy and the experienced Doula at this time. But I needed more to truly birth me into the midwife i was called to be…

I walked away with more than i could ever imagined. The midwife i am today is thanks to my time spent at .

Fast forward 10+ years and I am a traditional midwife. Living and working interantionally with various organizations that are deeply aligned with my purpose….to preserve and uplift traditional midwifery as an antidote to the maternal health crisis.

We are just 7 days away from gathering to raise the last bit of funds for the inaugural cohort of the Black Midwives Fellowship!!!!

October 13th-28th we will be in Uganda to visit MHI 🫶🏿🤩🥰 I am bringing 6 Black birth workers along with me!!! We need to sale 32 more tickets to make it happen!!!

The Black Midwives Fellowship intends to bring an elder midwife with us for each cohort. We desire to remove barriers by covering her flight, accommodations, food, and giving the midwives at an equitable pay for hosting her along with all of us.

In class last week said “I can forgive you babe still chop your head off”. Forgiveness isn’t about making excuses for the other person, forgetting what happened, means that what happened to you was ok, dissolving responsibility, justice, reconciliation…..

This forgiveness container has come about over time. When I think about the spaces I wish to curate and hold…healing and transformation are at the ROOT. My online curated community is a sacred space for us to heal, grow, transform, and learn.

There is no other space like this. This space centers BIPOC families and practitioners who support them. BUT truly anyone who feels called to be in community are more than welcomed to come.

In addition to our highlighted offerings this month during Summer school, we have monthly regular gatherings as well. There are hundreds of hours of recordings. A vibrant community feed to connect, share, ask, and archive.

Happy Juneteenth!!!

Was reflecting on “us” earlier and just literally amazed. Blackness is such an expansive identity, the driving force of humanity. So often, even or maybe especially, as Black people we think of ourselves as victims. We think of ourselves in comparison to others. Our food is this our that..as compared to what? Our hair is this or that…as opposed to what?

What would it look like for us to heal? What would it look like for us to be whole? Affirming ourselves in any space amongst anyone: This is our food, this is our clothes, this is our music, this is our nose…This is our hair…These are our values…etc.

I want to hear from yall…there is no one answer. Many things have contributed to who we are and many things will contribute to who we will be…

We rest for 40 days days to be well for the next 40 years!

Did you know that all around the world indigenous people had protocols and guidelines in how the immediate postpartum period was held? Just about all of us tested for 40 days. In Korea they rest for 100 days, ha!!

However, there is SOOOO much to unpack here. We are absolutely experiencing cultural amnesia. Resting is t sustainable in a society that places people over profit. Families are so disjointed or nonexistent. Individualism is a cultural stain that paints our perspectives to see lack in giving versus reciprocity. So on and so forth….

However, I’ve also witnessed people with minimal resources band together and hold their loved ones. I’ve seen how other cultures make systems of sustainability.

Here are some ideas to support a loved one during postpartum:

Planning a nesting party
Doing the laundry but I can’t pick it up and drop it of
making or buying food
Providing childcare
running errands
FaceTime dates/checkins

Mother’s Day in a society is lip service at most and truly gas lighting in a society that doesn’t hold those who Mother…

Yesterday I received flowers from my beloved husband even though we are thousand of miles apart. I felt soooooo much gratitude for my children… being able to Mother them is such a honor… yet, there was a looming feeling ruminating somewhere very deep inside of me.

The collective rage.

Mothers are not valued in this society. We are disregarded, disrespected, and discriminated against.

What a joke to give us flowers when we need maternity leave policies that allow us to stay home with our babies.

What an insult to give us a card when we need child care, food, housing…

How audacious to give us a day to “celebrate” us when we have astronomical rates of mortality and morbidity that are over 85% preventable?!

Many things can be true at once…on this Scorpio full moon I want to hold the nuance, the shadow, the grief, the depth.

Holding those who mother, who chose not to mother, who grieve their mother, who can not mother (but desire to), who are estranged from their mothers, who are care taking their mothers, who can’t stand mothers days, who appreciate being held and celebrated, who love tf out of mothering,

Each and everyone of us have been transformed by the mother or by mothering…

I absolutely love cooking for my clients. You can’t consider yourself a traditional birth worker and not know how to cook. ALOT of people ask me how do they begin to study to be a traditional midwife…I’d say a great place is begin in the kitchen and the garden.

One of the ways that I am upgrading the curriculum for the immersion happening this December in Ghana is by going deeper into herbs and food ways. I’m excited for you each to walk away with recipes and herbal medicine that we will make together.

This is why I added the innovative group on Virtual a circle called “Cooking and Conjuring”. This is. Space where we can share about fertility focused foods, nutrient dense foods, and herbal remedies. I will be adding a step by step guide to making my delicious oxtail and lentil soup.
