We loved seeing Jess on a panel at Chief x Mentorship Night! The panel was moderated by Chelsea Larsuel, where Jess, along with Sophie Taitt, Lynn Casey, Nicole Anderson, and Megan Vixie, reflected on the mentors who shaped their journeys and the role mentorship plays in their leadership today. After the panel, Chief members participated in a speed mentorship session, sharing advice, encouragement, and connection with young women at pivotal moments in their careers. When women invest in each other through mentorship, the ripple effects can reach entire communities.

An exciting update from our previous portfolio highlight:

Protect the Sacred’s Native Youth Summit participant Eriona Tapahe placed First Runner-Up at the 2025 Miss Navajo Nation Pageant with winning best traditional foods, contemporary talent, and essay.

We’re inspired by Protect the Sacred’s leadership in the Native community and the way they’re inspiring youth to engage with their culture in ways like this.

As traditional news outlets fade, content creators are stepping in covering underreported issues, translating breaking news in real time, and earning the trust of communities long overlooked by legacy media.

Co-authored by our Investment Associate, Abi Leung and CEO & co-founder, Ashwath Narayanan, this report explores how we can transform one-off creators into enduring civic institutions.

Carlos had the chance to attend a powerful joint conference hosted by Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) and Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP) in Albuquerque, New Mexico this past month. It was the first time these two organizations teamed up for their annual gatherings, and the energy was contagious. The conference focused on how philanthropy can better support Latine and Indigenous communities, both in the U.S. and across Latin America and the Caribbean. Sessions dug into everything from rethinking traditional funding models to defending democracy and Indigenous rights, all with an eye toward collective liberation.

Join us in welcoming Mackenzie Carlson to our team for the summer as our MBA Fellow through the .la VC Fellowship!

A Los Angeles native and MBA candidate at USC Marshall, Mackenzie began her career at the intersection of entertainment and technology, supporting production and strategy at Netflix and Roku. She worked on the Emmy Award-winning show, The Umbrella Academy, for three seasons before launching Irish Cowboy Productions under the Netflix banner and later leading post-production at Roku Originals.

Her experience managing creative projects and scaling content strategies sparked a passion for how mission-driven businesses grow — ultimately leading her to pursue venture capital. At NMV & NRV, she’s excited to support visionary founders focused on the convergence of media, technology, politics, storytelling, and activism.
