Grandma's Hand Tribute Awards an annual celebration which honors those women in our community who have inspired us with their love, personal experiences, and actions. It is a community tradition created by Sister Rolanda Allaha Wilkins director of Earth Mama Healing, Inc. based in Sacramento who is a phenomenal leader, organizer, youth advocate and educator. YEWAS hosted our first Grandma's Hands in Oakland in 2018. One of our goals is to teach youth to acknowledge and honor our positive community elders while they are still in our midst as opposed to waiting until our beloved grandmothers, grandfathers, teachers, or leaders who have impacted our lives have decreased. In addition to being recognized by the community, our honorees will receive awards, Brunch, and flowers, their names will be listed on a Proclamation from the city of Oakland,

Please join (YEWAS) Young Empowered Woman Achieving Self and Bay Area (SOT)and Sisters of Tomorrow Rites of Passage Programs for Girls of African Descent and Sacred Grove Traditions in honoring our community "Sheroes" by nominating a Grandmother or Elder who you feel embodies the energy and spirit of Grandma Hands. Also, mark your calendars and plan on celebrating with us June 1st for Oakland's 4th Annual Grandma's Hand Community Tribute Awards.

Our Story

Sacred Grove was conceived in 1990 when I first began my journey learning about alternative and natural methods of healing. Originally, I was drawn to natural medicine to help my parents and I soon discovered that a wholistic lifestyle was necessary to heal & prevent generational legacies of diseases like diabetes, heart disease and self-neglect. When I graduated from college and midwifery school, I returned to the Bay Area looking for like-minded folks to build with. My dream was to work collectively with other midwives and healers to create grassroots learning circles and study groups where we could exchange knowledge and learn from one another. Eventually, the vision expanded to Oshun's Garden Wholistic Day Retreat where we offered black women and girls in our community opportunities to be educated about wholistic healing practices, the importance of prioritizing self-care, meet healers, practice self-care modalities on themselves, and receive services. “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” Audre Lorde Sacred Grove Traditions is a collective of Midwives, Doulas, Health Professionals, Mothers, Artists, Activists, Dancers, Students, Youth, Educators, and Healers from various backgrounds and modalities. Out of necessity many of us turned to alternative, natural methods of healing ourselves and are reclaiming the medicine of our ancestors to regain control of our bodies, our health, and our destiny. We provide education and wider access to holistic and natural methods of healing and wellness for young girls and women of African descent. We facilitate cultural rite of passage training and mentorship for young girls and teens to support their growth and development into responsible and thriving adult women. We understand that mothers are the first teachers and the pillars of the community, so our goal is to support them and their families thereby ensuring wellness and survival for our communities and for future generations.
