I’m biased but nonetheless obsessed with my seven-year-old’s character drawings! She just sits outside with a pad of paper and black marker and comes up with character after character, straight out of her incredible brain. I want to be friends with this cool activist chick, but at least I’m already friends with her creator.

Back to school means quick and easy breakfasts area hot commodity. Throw your smoothie ingredients in the blender the night before to save time. The next morning simply add the frozen fruit, blend, and you’ll be sipping your smoothie in less than one minute. I use a plant milk, spinach, cocoa powder, bran/flax meal and nut butter, and throw a frozen banana in the next morning.

I’m not saying I’ll never buy my kids new things. Sure I will. But what I’ve realized is that they have just as much fun window shopping and taking pictures of things they “want” than they would if we actually bought it all! The careful selection, the documenting, and the satisfaction and anticipation of knowing it’s now on “The List” brings them so much joy. And then, before birthdays or Christmas, we look through the photos and 22/25 get laughed at… “why did I want that?!?” Those other three are what I tell people who really want to get them something. It’s a system that has worked for our family, and teaches delayed gratification and that we don’t need everything we want the minute we want it!
