Diastasis Recti! I was told that the muscles weaken during pregnancy which makes some sense due to making space for the growing baby in the womb. Women’s DR muscles stretch with each pregnancy and the DR gap may be wider based on several factors.
Relationship with Self Note: In reading the comments in the above short video, I noticed that many of the women did not like their bodies after pregnancy, especially after subsequent pregnancies. I was one of them. After 21 years just about since my last pregnancy, I am still dealing with DR. I never heard from my doctors about DR with each pregnancy nor after L&D. Did you? Years later, I asked about it and was told about the need to do pelvic floor exercises to heal DR. Did I make space for this form of self care while my children were little or even teens. No. Did you? My reasons for probably similar to yours. If I am correct, my relationship with myself, which includes my perceptions of other’s expectations for me as a human, a woman and a mother, influenced my use of time and energy. My relationship with myself held me back from keeping the part of me, that’s separate from other’s perceptions and my interpretations of their beliefs about how I should be using my time and energy as a mother, from not being “x’d out.” Well, I am finally, strength training, walking a lot, and stretching regularly - before I help, assist, or actively engage with others - early in the mornings. Will these habits correct my DR significantly? Probably not. If I were 30 and younger, I would have been doing all of the above along with my healthy diet regularly, regardless of What’s going on in my life. After 30, it’s about maintaining what we have in bone density and muscles. Studies of the brain.. says we can improve and change the brain for the better with new and corrective experiences. I am focusing on creating space for myself in new and corrective ways.. for me and to the glory of God… even though my focus is on giving myself to godly exercises for the soul and the spirit, my body houses the soul and the spirit. Thus, the soul, spirit, and the body work together to influence one another. I am no longer neglecting any part of my body.
