I had the opportunity to be with my persevering friends at NatCapLyme and brilliant scientists from GMU at today’s presentation of Lyme Awareness Month by the Board of Supervisors of Fairfax County. [Note that the 2 scientists are on the panel in my profile picture above.] Tireless.

In honor of May being Lyme Disease Awareness Month, I'll be posting daily tips and tools. First, I'd like to debunk the myth that the tick must be attached for 24-36 hours. Ticks can infect one's blood in a matter of seconds. To remove a tick, use tweezers to firmly grasp the tick's mouth parts and pull up quickly but without crushing the tick. Clean the area of the bite with an antibiotic ointment. Place tick on a cotton ball in a plastic bag and send tick to lab for testing. Here's a good video:

I've been asked to help publicize the next ILADS event. This one is right down the road! From Monte Skall, Executive Director of NatCapLyme:

Please do your part!

This is your opportunity to educate your medical providers and spread tick-borne disease awareness across Virginia. The message is originally from ILADS, the premier medical organization for healthcare providers interested in the comprehensive treatment of all tick-borne diseases.

Please consider forwarding this to the medical providers in your life - it is a one-day medical conference providing a "crash course" on Lyme and other tick-borne diseases being offered on June 6th in Richmond, Virginia. Offering CME credits, registration may be free for healthcare providers practicing in southern Virginia. There is also a discounted hotel room for those joining the networking event the night before.

This is therefore a super-affordable opportunity for doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and others eligible for ILADS membershipto learn the basics about tick-borne diseases with potentially free registration for those practicing south of Richmond - please email conference@ilads.org for more information.

Thank You,
Monte Skall
Executive Director
National Capital Lyme Disease Association
