Prayers, thoughts, and comfort to all that knew, respected, and loved Ms. Rich.
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of former City Council Member Mary Sue Rich.
Rich was born in Ocala on August 31, 1940. She was a pioneer and trailblazer for our great city.
She dedicated her life to public service, becoming the first Black woman elected to the Ocala City Council in 1995.
She focused her efforts on helping underserved communities and developing West Ocala. She served on City Council for 24 years until her retirement in 2019.
In 2023, the City of Ocala opened the doors to a new indoor facility for seniors, youth and families in West Ocala. That facility was named in her honor: The Mary Sue Rich Community Center at Reed Place, 1821 NW 21st Ave.
Rich passed away on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025. She was 85 years old. Our condolences go out to the Rich family.
Service arrangements and opportunities for the public to pay their respects will be announced in coordination with the family, at a later date.
