โš ๏ธHow many of y'all have ever seen the damage black widow spider bites can do to a horse?โš ๏ธ

โ˜ ๏ธ Kiara sustained black widow bites in the summer of '23, & they are still causing issues 2 years after the fact.

๐Ÿฉบ I have an excellent team of veterinarians I'm working with to address these bites; Dr. Colton & Dr. Valerie with PEVS & EPIC, & most recently Dr. Alessandra with Ozone VetCare.

๐Ÿฅ We've been passively treating them thus far because open wounds + FL summer + flies = major problems with healing.

๐Ÿ’จ Dr. Ale has begun teaching me about integrating ozone gas treatments into Kiara's regimen. I'm excited to see how the next two weeks of treatment go & am hopeful for positive changes regarding these bites.

๐Ÿ“š After this current round of treatment, I'll be re-evaluating with Dr. Colton, & will consider a more aggressive treatment plan later this fall after the brunt of fly season has concluded.

๐Ÿซถ Keep an eye out for more info regarding these bites & comment below if you have any questions!

๐ŸŽ Benefits of Proprioception Exercises for Horses ๐ŸŽ

- Improved Joint Stability
โ€ข Helps strengthen their stabilizing muscles.
โ€ข Supports ligaments & tendons, reducing the risk of injury or re-injury.
- Enhanced Body Awareness
โ€ข Helps re-establish the pathways that tell them where their feet & limbs are in space.
โ€ข Improves coordination, balance, & responsiveness under saddle or in-hand.
โ€ข Reduces clumsiness & tripping.
- Improved Performance & Movement Efficiency
โ€ข Improves stride accuracy, balance, & rhythm.
โ€ข Leads to more controlled gaits & smoother transitions.
โ€ข Supports collection & self-carriage.
- Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation
โ€ข Retrains neuromuscular pathways after injury.
โ€ข Builds protective strength & control during recovery.
โ€ข Improves load distribution, reducing compensatory strain.
- Core & Postural Strength
โ€ข Engages the horseโ€™s core muscles.
โ€ข Improves spinal alignment & posture.
โ€ข Reduces undue stress on the back, which supports both horse & rider.
- Confidence & Mental Engagement
โ€ข Exercises (like poles or balance pads) stimulate the brain.
โ€ข Horses become more confident navigating new environments.
โ€ข Reduces anxiety, helps focus, & strengthens horse-human trust.
- Longevity & Soundness
โ€ข Keeps horses mobile & safer from falls.
โ€ข Supports soundness & comfort in horses with degenerative joint conditions.

- Examples of Equine proprioception exercises:
โ€ข Pole Work (raised or ground poles, fan layouts, varied spacing).
โ€ข Cavaletti at walk/trot for stride awareness.
โ€ข Balance pads for improving stabilization & re-establishing proprioception.
โ€ข Backing up in-hand for core & proprioceptive activation.
โ€ข Uneven terrain (walking over hills, gravel, sand, shallow water).
โ€ข Gentle body rock exercises to stimulate balance reflexes.

*Just like with any modality or exercise, there are contraindications for certain conditions. This is why it's so important to consult with your bodyworker & veterinarian to make sure your horse is a good candidate for any exercises that you are wanting to add to your horse's regimen.*

๐Ÿงก A little proprioceptive training goes a long way toward a sound, confident, and happy horse.

๐ŸŒก114ยฐ Heat Index. 97% Humidity. No Breeze.
๐Ÿšจ These are fatal conditions for horses and humans alike. These extreme heat days come with no clouds, no breeze, no afternoon rain, no relief. It's imperative to take extra measures to ensure your horse's well-being through these heat waves.
โ€ข
๐Ÿšจ Even horses who've handled summers in the past can crash under the right (or wrong) set of circumstances.
โ€ข
๐Ÿ’ก If your horse struggles with the heat, finding out why is essential.
Some common but often overlooked causes:
โš ๏ธ Gaps in basic support; hydration, electrolytes, shade, airflow, fresh cool water.
โš ๏ธ Underlying systemic conditions (cushing's, metabolic issues, damaged nervous system).
โš ๏ธ Toxic burden from environmental toxins and heavy metals.
โ€ข
๐Ÿ˜ฅ I've seen it firsthand: Two of my mares were poisoned by environmental toxins, and it damaged their ability to thermoregulate. My mini has cushing's and metabolic issues, same outcome --> heat intolerance.
โ€ข
๐Ÿด Supporting your horse in the heat isn't one size fits all.
It takes an individual approach based on your horse's history, workload, age, and environment. Any supplementation and extra modalities should be discussed with your vet prior to beginning them to ensure your horse is a good candidate.
โ€ข
๐Ÿ’ก The slides in this post offer ideas and discussion points to take to your vet so you can build a heat management plan that fits your horse's unique needs.
โ€ข
โœ…๏ธ Be proactive.
โœ…๏ธ Pay attention to the signs.
โœ…๏ธ Don't wait until it's too late.
โ€ข
๐ŸŒฟ Your horse's life depends on it.

If you have a horse struggling with thermoregulation issues, acupuncture is a great modality to add to their regimen! Happy to have such an excellent facility & team that I can refer client horses to, in addition to them being able to help provide collaborative care for my personal horses๐Ÿ™Œ

Fun fact- Acupuncture is the modality that got me started on my career path back in 2015 while I was living in Wyoming! The veterinarian who performed acupuncture on my mare Cali, gave her an extra year of a good quality of life that she would not have otherwise had. Seeing how much this modality helped Cali sparked the fire that led me to where I am today๐Ÿซถ

Horses get headaches too!

Reasoning depends on the individual horse. In this case it was a combination of physical and mental aspects that lead to Kiara's headache and overall body soreness.

Physical Aspects
- Post dental work
- Hard heat cycle
- Working on conditioning

Mental Aspects
- Having to share a turn out pen with Mazie

Kiara is an excellent example for keeping in mind that not all horses want to be turned out together in a group. She can tolerate short time periods of group turnout with my other horses, but she much prefers to have her own pen with the other horses near her. She's had to be in group turnout for the past month or so while I'm working on fixing my other turn outs and that has made her quite irritable.

Her physical aspects plus the emotional component built up and resulted in her having quite the headache.

These before/after pictures are from the same day, right before her session and then right after. The massive amounts of tension through her face have been relieved and she is feeling much better๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿค—

When you're trying to determine the cause of your horse's tension, it's important to always evaluate both the physical and emotional contributing factors๐Ÿ’›

โœจ๏ธChanging your environment can change your horse's lifeโœจ๏ธ

When we think of basic horse needs, we typically are thinking of things such as food, shelter, fencing, and companionship. All of which are very important to your horse's health.

But there's an even more basic level of foundational needs that are frequently overlooked. These needs are good quality water, soil, and air.

If you don't think these aspects affect your horses, let these pictures serve as an example for how drastically they play a role in their health.

There is a 6 & 7 month difference between these pictures. Their feed didn't change, their routine only minimally changed, their level of care didn't change; so what has made the HUGE difference in their overall health and appearance?

The environment is what changed. In September they were in Texas, now we are going into 7 months living in Florida. They are breathing clean air and are turned out on good ground that is not overrun with toxic plants. Most importantly, they are no longer drinking contaminated water.

If you only take away one point from this post, let it be this. Please get your water tested. Maintain your well. Put filters in place to purify the water. And in regards to the frequency of testing, at a minimum the water needs to be tested annually.

My horses are thriving in their new environment. Looking, feeling, & moving better than ever before. Next steps are implementing a more consistent work routine for them to start building muscle!๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ™Œ

Coordinating collaborative appointments! Scheduling certain appointments/plans in close proximity to bodywork increases the benefits your horse receives and also helps keep increased levels of tension from setting in. Here is a list of the general time frames I recommend for coordinating bodywork appointments!

*This is generalized list of time frames. Horse's may require slight variations based on their individual needs.*

It does not matter how much you have won if it's at the expense of the horse's well-being.

Earnings do not excuse poor horsemanship. Poor horsemanship tends to get excused if the rider has a big name to them. And anyone who dares to speak out about it, gets ripped to shreds by the internet. When are we going to start seeing the problem with this mentality? "That's how the industry is", "Well they've won X amount of money, buckles, or titles". None of that matters when the horse is the one who pays the price. Ego has no place on the back of a horse.

Beating a horse in order to get them to do what you want and because you can't control your temper is not training. That is a complete failure of horsemanship. That's traumatizing a horse to the point they shut down and submit so that you stop hurting them.

Horses do the best they can with the knowledge they have. If a horse acts out, 99% of the time it's because there's a problem. If you cannot adapt your methods to what the horse needs and you turn to abuse, then you have no business training horses.

Not every horse is going to be a good fit for every trainer, and that's okay! It's up to YOU as a trainer to know where your strengths lie and to be able to tell a client that you may not be the best fit for their horse. If you want to successfully work with a large variety of horses, take the time to learn about bloodlines, breeds, personalities, and the training methods that work best with the different personality traits. If a horse is struggling, take a step back and evaluate yourself and your environment. Do they need a different approach? A day off? Feed changes? A trip to the vet? Bodywork? Farrier changes? More turn out? Is there an imbalance within myself that is transferring to the horse? Are they understanding what I'm trying to ask of them? Is their foundation solid enough to where I can ask for the next step?

Horses feed off our energy and they know when you don't like them. If you reach the point that you hate training or hate horses in general, then for the sake of the horse you need to stop. Change your path. Take time off and maybe come back to it later. But don't take out your problems on the horse.

A horse's well-being is more important than your ego. A horse's well-being is more important than your paycheck. A horse's well-being is more important than your desire to win. There is nothing that matters more than the horse itself.

It takes YEARS experiencing all different kinds of horses to figure out what type you work best with. Put in the time, work with and for other trainers, see what type of horse suits you, and then be able to say no to horses that you know are going to be outside of your area of expertise.

Above all else, do it for the love of the horse or don't do it at all.

I often get asked if I still take in outside horses for training and due to my health conditions, I no longer do.

However! I can absolutely point you in the direction of the best trainers and horseman that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. And those people are Caitie and Elliot Holtzman of Versatile Horsemanship in Nocona, TX. They are incredible trainers, they love what they do, and you will never have to worry about the well-being of your horse while it is in their care.

Hard to believe it's been 9 years since I began doing bodywork! As we close out another year, I'd just like to say thank you to all of my past & present clients who have had me be a part of their horse's care team over the years๐Ÿฅฐ. Excited to continue into this upcoming year, and finally be able to transition from a mobile practice into an in-house program like I've always dreamed of. Wishing everyone well as we come into the New Year!๐ŸŽ†๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ

PS: As the Texas winter sets in, and you just want to escape the swampy, muddy, icy, bone-chilling cold; y'all are more than welcome to bring your horse to the amazing state of Florida to see me and escape that level of cold๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ™Œ
