Connection to Self. Borrowing once again from who discuses the idea of putting yourself in tough situations to see how you're going to respond.

Personally I purposely applied for job with a machine shop where my knowledge was very little to nothing about what they do.

The only thing I could bring to the table was a crazy work ethic.

Over the months of learning the hard way about various parts, procedures, and reading different kinds of people that I usually didn't interact with beforehand; the only constant in this growth process was shutting the ego down repeatedly and being open to learning.

The tough situations aren't tests to see how tough you are, they are about learning.

Can you learn in the tough moments when you made a mistake and people are chewing you out for it? Can you keep your mind calm enough to understand what the mistake you made and make note of it?

I don't know everything, but this insight about learning from tough situations is definitely one I'll keep in regular brain rotation.

To fully understand the value of community, one must go into the wilderness.

This wilderness can be the wilderness of being alone with yourself or in the outdoors.

The key element is that it's untamed and in those moments of facing the untamed is where the truth is revealed.

I cannot tell others what that looks like, they have to go see it for themselves.

Often when people go on vacation, they fill up their schedule with so many things that when they get home, they'll say they need a vacation from the vacation.

Next time you schedule time for a vacation, make sure it's actually a vacation.

Connection to Sport. Many before me participated in Sports and many after will do the same.

For a time period, whatever that length is, Athletes devote time, energy, and money to see what they can do.

The cycle of people participating in Sports won't ever stop because how many life lessons and benefits it offers. Whether that is recreational, competitive, or doing a sport independent of any organization/community. In those generational cycles, lessons can passed down to make that experience better

Currently my energy and focus have moved away from my Sport, but that doesn't mean the lessons or benefits disappear from my life. I think of those lessons and benefits as being in a vault that I can access anytime I want.

Do your Sport in a way that you want to create a mental vault for those lessons and benefits, those experiences weren't for nothing.

Connection to Sport.

*This isn't about showing how great I am or what I've done in the past, this is about some insights upon further reflection*

Everyone wants to Win. To be the Top Dog. You get the trophy, the accolades, and attention.

On this day, I was in peak fitness and beat 2nd place by over 1 minute on the 5 Mile Course. By all standards of above, I got the trophy, the accolades, and attention from people at the race.

But here's the interesting thing; after I crossed that finish line and got my award, that feeling of winning disappeared. The attention was short lived, the trophy was in my bag, and the accolades were now internal.

While from far away, winning looks like it's the best thing ever and that it will solve all problems. Initially it does, but it's not sustainable.

Instead of just focusing on winning a race or competition, ask yourself are you sustainably winning at Life?

Are you growing strong and healthy relationships with people? Are you taking care of your body? Are you evolving your comfort zone?

These questions are only a few to consider, but they are a good starting point.

Connection to Community.

In the last 30 years, a message many people (myself included) have bought into is that you need to be strong and independent.

This idea that we need to be physically, mentally, and emotionally tough to make it through day to day life.

On paper that makes sense as the environment and people around us seem to be against us. But in reality, we're all left alone.

While not everyone is supposed to be someone you can trust and rely on, you do need people that meet that standard.

Whether it's knowing those 10 people within 10 miles or 100 miles, the key thing is having that in your life.

Yes be strong physically, mentally, and emotionally, but do it not just for you, but for those people in your community that you trust.

At a primal level, we're not supposed to do life alone.
