I remember telling my husband during Lent last year that I felt like a lost sheep that Jesus had forgotten about. A few days after this conversation, I was thrifting with a friend and found this framed art print that said, “I am choosing to trust I have not been forgotten.” I bought it and hung it in our living room so I see it often. Sometimes I need the reminder to choose to believe the Good Shepherd has not abandoned me.
Luckily, the Good Shepherd is good because He shepherds the lost, regardless of whether or not they believe they have been forgotten. You can show up teary-eyed, angry, and weary, and still be counted among His sheep just like those who are joyful, peaceful, and hopeful. “For the Lamb who is in the center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Rev 7:17).
Infertility and/or pregnancy loss can make life feel like a perpetual Lent, as we work every day to believe we have not been forgotten. If Lent has been a tender time for you, know that two things can be true at the same time: What a relief, that we have not been forgotten and we continue to be carried by the Good Shepherd. And, at the same time, how painful, to have experienced circumstances that make it easy to forget this truth.
I am so honored to be hosting a mini-pilgrimage with this Thursday evening over Zoom to offer a time of rest and reflection for anyone who is journeying through the dessert of Lent while carrying the cross of infertility or loss. If you or someone you know would like to join me for this free event, you can register at the link in my bio. ❤️🩹
