We prepare for winter conditions by winterizing our cars, homes and pulling out our winter clothing, but what about our animals? Horses are using lots of energy to keep warm this time of year. Things to consider:
• Increasing their hay/grain based on age and condition
• adding in salt and mineral for electrolyte balance and hydration.
• For those horses that don’t have a good coat for winter, consider a good horse blanket or shelter.
• Keep water free of ice utilizing tank heaters. Check for icy patches near your tanks. These icy areas can cause your horse to slip and fall causing injury.
• Providing adequate protection from wind and weather conditions.
• Consider adding in a massage session to increase circulation and relieve stressed muscles.
