Christmas is here and with that comes beautiful Christmas light displays. How does someone with low vision enjoy the lights?
First, grab a mug of hot cocoa and head out. Once you are there, describe in detail the different lights. Describe if it is Santa Clause or a Gingerbread man with a candy cane. Mention the colors of lights. Be as descriptive as possible.
This helps your low vision friend feel like they are able to experience the lights even though they might not see them as well.

Winter is here and with that comes hot beverages.
How do you pour these beverages with low vision without overflowing the glass or burning yourself? You can purchase a device that hangs on the edge of a glass. It will beep or vibrate. You can also place a clean ping pong ball in a glass. Carefully pour the liquid until you feel the ball.
Please use caution while pouring any hot liquid.

Christmas is around the corner! What do you get for your low vision family member or friend?
Talking clocks or watches are a great option. If you want something more Hi-tech, devices such as Alexa or Google Assistant can help with reminders and several other tasks. An iPad has a magnifier to help someone with low vision see the screen easier.
Low Vision Strategies is glad to provide training on these devices.

Thanksgiving is among us and with that comes great food!
It may be hard to manage your diabetes. You can control it by taking a walk 15 minutes after a meal. This can reduce insulin resistance by up to 50 percent!
You can eat whatever you want, but do so in moderation. A glass of wine is also fine in moderation. If you do drink, please do so responsibly.

Please be mindful of blind people while in public. The white cane or guide dog indicates a visual impairment. If you see someone with a cane or dog, step aside and let them through. There is no need to stare.
If they appear to need assistance, ask them. They will let you know if they are in need.

Testimonial provided by Ruby K.

Marlene was very patient with me while I was learning how to use the magnifier on my phone. She never got impatient with me. Marlene was always polite. I would call her again if I need additional services.

On November 5th millions of Americans will head to the poles to cast their vote for the next President of The United States.

How do people with low vision mark their ballots?

One option is the accessible voting machine. This allows those with low vision to vote independently. Simply rotate a dial until you hear your preferred candidate’s name, then press the select button. Once you have made your selections, press the cast Ballot button.

These voting machines are not available at all polling sites or it may not be working. Have a backup plan. You can have someone trustworthy help you. They will need to sign a document stating that they agree to mark your ballot according to your wishes even if it goes against their views. The final option is to have a polling staff member assist you.

If you are low vision and choose to vote absentee, you can have two witnesses observe you fill out your ballot. You do not need to have it notarized if you have low vision. The witnesses need to sign an affidavit stating that he or she did not mark your ballot or persuade you one way or the other.

Pictured is someone with low vision proudly displaying his I voted sticker after early voting.

Do you use Voice Over or Siri on the iPhone? It can be difficult to dial a number when asked to enter an extension.
Apple has designed a way to make dialing an extension easier. Find the contact information and tap edit. Scroll to the phone number and make sure you are at the end of the number. If you use Voice Over, swipe to the left of the pound key and you will hear shift. Tap shift and swipe left until you hear the word comma. Enter two commas followed by the extension number.
Now when you call, your iPhone will automatically dial the extension you need. This works well for places you call often.

Eye injuries can happen at home! According to prevent blindness.org, accidents involving household items make up for 125,000 eye injuries a year. 90 percent of these injuries can be prevented by taking proper safety measures.

Wear impact resistant safety glasses while working with power tools. This prevents debris from getting lodged in the eye. Safety glasses should also be worn while working with chemicals. Chemicals should be securely stored and out of reach of children.
