Important Announcement! We have put together a plan to solve a problem for our students! With each class, both the students and the coaches are improving, I’m impressed and proud. As we continue to give harder challenges to our kids, they deserve a strong foundational knowledge to work from. I have spent many hours putting together (and rewriting) a plan for setting a strong foundation for our students. For the next 6 weeks, we will be completing our “accelerator camp”. These will be at the regular class time, but will focus entirely on the building blocks they’ll need into the future. 13 choreographed learning experiences with every drill planned with intention.
Why? Here is a story from my Junior year in high school. I was taking a pre calculus class. I had always prided myself in nearly straight As. We were introduced to a concept that I did not fully understand, and I received a C on that test. Not the end of the world! I soon found out that the next section built upon the one we just learned, and I still did not understand it well enough. As they made it more complex, I was fully left behind. I failed that following test. This is why I want to lay a solid foundation to build from for jiu jitsu.

For the next 6 weeks, it is important to stay consistent and get the kids to each and every class, so they have all of the foundation they will need for the challenges planned ahead. I am confident they will come out the other side better in many ways! Please do make it for each lesson, and give your kids the best chance for success!

Thank you team, I look forward to these following weeks!

20 episodes. That’s the threshold it takes to reach the top 1% of all podcasters ever! Ninety-nine percent of all podcasters do not pass that mark, and that’s out of the people who take the leap to start! It excites me to imagine how far I can go with just a little bit of daily work towards my goals. One of the only things that can stop me is to push so hard I burn out, or in other words, I destroy my incentive and therefore destroy my motivation. I will be the tortoise 🐢, not the hare 🐇. I will get there, and I will enjoy the journey, because that is what keeps me on it! You will get there too, just find ways to enjoy the journey!

It’s easy to wait for motivation to do something that is challenging. It feels like a lack of motivation is a compelling reason to wait. Many times, my long term goals will take consistent daily practice that can be less than enjoyable. I know most days I will feel no motivation to do the activity, and I can expect no reward or acknowledgment for the hard work. This is challenging to keep up! If I tie my action to my motivation, I will only get closer to my goal in the small windows of time where I feel motivated. My progress will be too slow that way. I need to do the work regardless of my motivation or emotional frame, and I will take motivation as a lucky bonus instead of requiring it as a prerequisite. I’m going to feel how I’m feeling whether I’m working towards my goal or not, might as well feel crappy while being productive towards a better future!

Mo Gawdat put great words to explain the happiness equation. Happiness is reality minus expectations. To be clear, I am not an advocate of trying to be happy all the time, I’d prefer to find peace in each of my emotions as they come. But, I think the lesson of the happiness equation is one that can help to enjoy things more often. If I hope for rain, I may find myself unhappy with a sunny day instead of taking it’s advantages and going for a nice stroll. If I expect things to be handed to me, I’m upset for having to work for it. I have learned to expect difficulty, and anticipate the punch in the face life inevitably throws. This way, I’ll be prepared when it happens, and I’ll enjoy each day it doesn’t that much more!

While on a run, I set a goal of 13 miles. In the 7th mile, I hurt my foot and could no longer keep my pace. For a while I considered just giving up, because it wouldn’t be possible to achieve my goal anymore. Instead, confronted with this new information, I set a different goal that would be similarly challenging to my circumstances. I was going to walk for another hour. Though it hurt, and I knew I would not get to 13 that day, I still walked for the hour. I managed the pain, and completed the goal. When it was over, I was not disappointed in missing the 13. I felt accomplished for finding flexibility and enduring changing circumstances. When the journey is long, the world will change. The goals may need to adjust with it. Anything is better than giving up and making no progress. Whatever you can still do, do it!
