Social Justice Day reminds us that equitable access to lactation support is essential for healthy families and strong communities.
At the Coalition of Oklahoma Breastfeeding Advocates, we focus on reducing the barriers that prevent many Oklahoma families from receiving the support they need. This includes improving workplace protections for pumping parents, expanding lactation education, and advocating for hospital and public health practices that serve all families fairly.
Our goal is simple: make sure every baby has access to human milk.

Kipley brings her wearable pumps to school every day, where she pumps during her second and fourth periods. To apply her pumps, Kipley goes into a private side room in her classroom. Once settled, she returns and proceeds with class. While she pumps in class, Kipley wears a nursing poncho as her pumping cover. After 30 minutes, she returns to the private room to remove her pumps.

Today on International Day of Women & Girls in Science, we’re celebrating Dr. Icie Gertrude Macy Hoober. A trailblazing biochemist whose early 20th‑century research reshaped what the world understands about human milk.
In 1920, Macy earned her PhD at Yale and committed her career to advancing the health of mothers, infants, and children—a mission sparked after hearing a provocative lecture about how little research funding was devoted to human milk compared to dairy animals.
Her landmark publication, Composition of Human Colostrum and Milk, became foundational to modern lactation science. She helped identify key components of human milk and led pioneering analyses of how milk composition supports early growth and development.
For 31 years, Macy directed research at the Merrill-Palmer School’s Nutrition Research Project, building one of the first scientific programs dedicated to understanding human milk as a dynamic, biologically sophisticated substance.
Today we honor her legacy and the women scientists who continue expanding our understanding of lactation, nutrition, and maternal‑infant health.
