Medicine in the 1870s was bold… leading the way for us to continue improving the treatment of scoliosis…

Dr. Lewis A. Sayre, one of America’s first orthopedic surgeons, believed that gravity itself could heal the human spine.

In his clinic, scoliosis patients were suspended by their arms, their bodies dangling in midair as their curved spines stretched straight.
Sayre would watch carefully — measuring every angle as tension pulled the twisted backbone into alignment.

Then came his invention: the plaster of Paris “jacket.”

While patients were still hanging, he wrapped their torsos in wet plaster. When it hardened, it created a stiff cast that locked the spine in its corrected position.

Painful? Almost certainly.

Innovative? Undeniably.

For the first time, people with severe spinal deformities could walk, move, and live without the crushing metal braces of old.

Sayre’s daring experiment — part science, part courage — became one of the foundations of modern orthopedics.

His patients hung by their arms...
But more than anything, they hung by hope.

I recently had the honor of participating in the PSSE (Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercise) Skills course through SSOL Schroth NYC given by Hagit Bertischevski and Andrea Lebel.

I am filled with gratitude to these outstanding practitioners who continue to share their growing knowledge of this special and unique approach to treat scoliosis.

Ongoing learning and research is greatly needed to increase awareness and offer this underexposed treatment approach to so many people who are unaware of its efficacy or even its existence.

I’m incredibly thankful for the unwavering support of my amazing teachers Hagit and Andrea, and for the work of SOSORT (International Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment) that are paving the way for PSSE to be recognized and more readily included in scoliosis and spine treatment management.

Scoliosis IS treatable!
We know scoliosis is progressive, but in the United States, we don't know much about how to manage the pain associated with it...UNTIL NOW!
There are treatment approaches that have been utilized around the world, but are now finally being offered here in the US, that have shown tremendous success in pain reduction.
