my latest post on reasons to avoid doomscrolling?
doesn’t matter — information alone, doesn’t matter

we don’t “fail” from lack of awareness
rather we stay where we are due to unchanged systems, habits and default pattern modes

if information were enough, would we have iatrogenic causation?
wouldn’t every protocol for XYZ work?
wouldn’t things “change”?

information alone won’t improve your outcomes
surely beating yourself up (mentally) won’t either

don’t let the noise of society condition you into ignoring your real life, nervous system and environments which all impact your capacity to achieve your goals

understand that knowing doesn’t necessarily result in doing
have grace with your bad self,
then determine the small actionable steps that you can take to get you 1% closer to where you want to go

We live in an overstimulated society. And walking around with a small computer in our pockets isn’t helping.

Making your own dopamine menu helps with this, since things like technologies (scrolling, pinterest, video games) should be on your dessert list! Hopefully it goes without saying, we’re mindful around our dessert selections.

Start small with the seed of awareness … no extremes necessary.

🧠 Attention Span
Constant scrolling demands too much firing of neuroreceptors at once. Which doesn’t support what the brain and body likes, which is consistency!

Limiting screen use in the early and late evenings creates more space for cognitive processing to support calmer and sustained focus.

😴 Sleep & Melatonin
Evening light exposure from screens can confuse the pineal gland and therefore blunt melatonin, the hormone that helps you rest and fall asleep.

Confirming that limiting screen time in the evenings will support deeper, more restorative sleep. Start by limiting staring at a screen in a dark room and instead have dim lights (or candle light) supporting the environment around you.

🧩 Brain Health
As we continue to learn, ongoing stimulation keeps the stress response active. Aka why are we living in chronic states of stress?!

Neural overload, rapid visual inputs and notifications stimulates the nervous system to an arousal state, increasing cortisol and sympathetic activity. Paired with interfering with sleep quality, it’s no surprise emotional regulation, motivation, memory formation and cognitive clarity are common complaints and increasingly becoming compromised by habitual actions like reaching for our devices.

🎨 Living in Alignment
Constantly being on and stimulated can lead us to forget that “real” life happens in the offline moments. Through novelty, adventure, moment, creativity, connection, community. Which actually are the moments that are supposed to activate and regulate dopamine and lower cortisol.

LEMON BALM (Melissa officinalis) is one of my FAVORITE herbs for supporting the nervous system, mood and cognition. i enjoy almost daily as tea and when needed as acute support tincture.

the journal Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment in 2014 published a study which reviewed several clinical trials that found Lemon Balm extracts can exert anxiolytic effects by helping to reduce symptoms of anxiety and promoting calmness through its ability to modulate neurotransmitter systems, such as GABAergic and cholinergic pathways, which are involved in anxiety regulation.

research published in the journal Phytotherapy Research in 2019 reviewed experimental studies that suggested Lemon Balm extracts may have anti-depressant effects thought to be mediated through modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.

an article in the Complementary Therapies in Medicine in 2019 reviewed clinical trials concluding that Lemon Balm may improve sleep quality and duration, particularly when combined with other calming herbs like valerian (my personal favorite as a sleep support!)

emerging evidence suggests that Lemon Balm may have neuroprotective effects, partly due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help mitigate oxidative stress and inflammation in the nervous system.

generally considered safe in adults and children. potential interactions can be seen with certain medications, especially for thyroid issues and sedatives.

explore the calming and therapeutic potential of lemon balm responsibly and make it part of your aromatic herbal collection!

inhale for 4 seconds
hold for a count of 7 seconds
exhale for 8 seconds

why is this technique relaxing?
• replenishes oxygen to be delivered to organs and tissues.
• regulates the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, opposed to the sympathetic nervous system.
• natural tranquilizer promoting rest and digest messaging to cells it's okay to be calm and reduce worry.

i've mentioned before about our patterns as humans; how the earth and body are in a rhythm. recognizing patterns and waves that strengthen our introspection and resiliency. practice, a state of being in flux and flow with the world around you. when we practice breathwork, hold space and have grace for ourselves when we're in a state of flux. that way, we can tap into our introspection and self-awareness we've continued to strength and find our new state of flow.

hard truth: we'll never know the true benefits of rhythms and routines in our body if we don't develop a practice. something that can be in flux, will eventually find a flow (so long as we don't resist). the more you fall down, the better you are at getting yourself back up. there might be a multitude of challenges seemingly presenting themselves to resist any state of flow. but ask yourself, would my future self benefit from XYZ? if i tried now, where could i be tomorrow or 1-month from now?

arguably, when faced with life challenges the hardest part can be starting something new, something foreign, something that requires discipline. what if you tried to start that something new, like breathwork?

let the what if's of life inspire you to where you want to go and who you want to be.

"what if i start 3-5 minutes of intentional breathwork every other day or on the weekends?"

"what if i can prove myself wrong about what i view as 'hard' or have resistance around?"

often it's what we resist, that we need for our well-being and if we don't address the resistance or what we're resisting, it will persist. that is the practice of life, an ebb or flux and flow.

SELF REMINDER — “peace can never be achieved by force. it can only be achieved by understanding.” 🌱

some of my greatest childhood memories are being downtown DC marching the mall protesting for world peace. yeah, even when i say it now i feel like i’m answering a miss universe pageant question. nonetheless, i still believe the distraction that is the war machine (primarily American) divides us well enough to make recognizing common ground, listening for the intent to just listen, and learning from one another to be near impossible due to the divisiveness of having different experiences, backgrounds, cultures, etc. meanwhile, underneath all the surface differences, we’re all just walking around in aging meat suits trying to figure out why the meat suit we have is what it is and then understand the complex intellect that goes with it in our brain/soul matter. 🧠🕊️

that’s the macro scale that can no longer be neglected. but turn to the micro reality check – how often are you butt hurt because you couldn’t strong-arm someone into seeing your perspective? why does it matter? i love taking a stance and sharing opinions (hopefully mostly when invited to), because i know my worldview is just that, my OWN. by sharing, we inspire and grow. grow to understand that instead of taking out boxing gloves for every topic, we can swap for empathy hats that doesn’t negate someone else’s lived experience and worldview. 🎩🗺️

furthermore, how often do we beat ourselves up for not being perfect? hi, it’s me ✨, Cassady 🙋‍♀️. why i love self-regulating techniques is because the introspection that is paired with it. when we deeply breathe with our inner awareness, even if we start by beating ourselves up, eventually we turn to having grace with ourselves, which might come after confusion, frustration, shame, or a myriad of emotions. understanding ourselves and accepting our quirks and the messiness of being part of the human experience is where we can start to develop our own peace. true, inner peace.✌️

so self reminder, let’s trade swords for olive branches and see what magic unfolds within ourselves and the world around us. 🫒🗡️✨
