“Everybody has an 8:46.” That’s the line I’ll always remember my freshman-year professor saying on 9/11—the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center. I can’t recall his name, but I’ll never forget the way his words landed with us—18-year-olds, just a few years after the attacks. The room was silent. Then he asked us: What will you do with your time here?
September 11th is a day I still can’t read much about—the stories are too heavy, too heartbreaking. I read them all and watched the horror and bravery unfold in real time on television. I choose to honor the day quietly, holding space for all who were lost, and for all whose lives were forever changed. And when I think back to that professor’s words, I’m reminded to make the most of the time I’ve been given.
