In 2025 I found out i was expecting my 5th child. I was in complete shock and very scared. Since 2004 i have been a mother but in 2020 when i embarked on the journey of being a birthworker nothing prepared me for all the highs and lows of working with the families. Advocating and supporting families especially black families is unique and so enlightening. I have seen families struggling with fertility and have unforeseeable issues during their pregnancy journey. So being scared to carry another life earthside was scary. My son Austin is now 3 months old and I celebrate his life and all my children’s lives as a sacred event because their are many that will never have children or their are women that will lose their lives bringing a child into the world. As 2026 begins I want to remind families to seek help and support during the journey of fertility, pregnancy and postpartum because a village is important.

Doula support is not only for the mother but for the family unit. A ear to listen to your concerns. A voice of encouragement and support. A person to hold space for you in your moments of certainty.

I will be taking on clients starting in February so if you know of anyone expecting please have them reach out to me

This is unfortunate and heartbreaking another black mother losing her life during such a major life event. Black mothers deserve better treatment in their healthcare💙

The American College of Nurse-Midwives mourns the devastating death of Dr. Janell Green Smith, CNM, who died from complications of childbirth. Dr. Smith was a respected midwife, scholar, and advocate whose life and work reflected a deep commitment to respectful, evidence-based, and equitable care.

That a Black midwife and maternal health expert died after giving birth in the United States is both heartbreaking and unacceptable. Her death underscores the persistent and well-documented reality that Black women—regardless of education, income, or professional expertise—face disproportionate risks during pregnancy and childbirth due to systemic racism and failures in care.

We grieve Dr. Smith’s loss and recognize it as a profound failure of the systems meant to protect birthing people. In her honor, ACNM commits not only to reaffirming our values, but to intensifying our actions to dismantle racial inequities in maternal health, strengthen accountability in care systems, and work alongside Black midwives, clinicians, and communities to prevent future tragedies.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Smith’s family, loved ones, and the midwifery community. We carry her legacy forward with urgency, humility, and resolve.

That baby is not crying to manipulate you.
That baby is crying because their body is flooded with stress.

Denmark just made headlines for saying what parents have been gaslit about for years
Leaving babies to Cry It Out is not harmless.

When babies cry without comfort, stress hormones spike. Their nervous system is overwhelmed. Their brain is still wiring itself based on how safe the world feels.

Denmark chose connection.

They chose responding. Holding. Comforting. Trusting biology over outdated advice.

And somehow parents who pick up their babies are still told they are creating bad habits.

No.
They are creating security.
Regulation.
Trust.

Babies do not learn independence by being ignored.
They learn safety by being answered.

If your instincts always told you Cry It Out felt wrong
This is your validation.

Share this for the parent who was told to let their baby scream
And for the baby who deserved comfort instead.
