Make the most of these last summer weeks by freezing your child’s favorite small toys in a block of ice. ❄️🌫️ Then work together to rescue them using tools that challenge and strengthen those little hands.
It’s a playful way to build fine motor skills, coordination, and problem-solving — all while having a blast!

This summer we are beating the heat with a pretend "Lemonade" stand using everyday materials from home! 🍋🥤☀️
Tongs & citrus juicers work on hand strength and coordination, while sponges, ice, and dyed water introduce different textures and temperatures.
Playing with a friend or sibling? It's a great way to practice turn-taking, pretend play, and sharing skills!
Cheers to play!

Proprioception is the sense that allows us to know where our body parts are in space, how to move them and how much strength or pressure we need to do so. There are pressure or proprioceptive receptors in our skin, muscles and joints. Proprioception plays a role in so many areas, such as coordination, posture, self-regulation and participation in all self-care activities.

Signs that may indicate proprioceptive processing issues include:
🌸Falling out of chairs
🌸Needing tight bear hugs or pressure on body to calm down
🌸Seeking out crashing/falling
🌸Difficulty imitating or mirroring body movements
🌸Not adjusting pressure needed for connecting clothing fasteners, writing, chewing or throwing/catching

Our occupational therapists are trained in recognizing proprioceptive processing differences to provide a plan to support your child's unique needs and help them participate in daily activities.

Some of our favorite ways to get calming proprioceptive input or to participate in "heavy work":
🌸Massage or hug from a loved one
🌸Heavy blanket or lap pad
🌸Throwing a SlamBall
🌸Pushing feet against the wall
🌸Raking in the garden

Stay tuned for our next sense in the Spring Sensory Series 🌼🌱

Happy Occupational Therapy Month!

Our occupational therapists work with children to integrate their sensory systems in order to regulate themselves to participate in daily activities.

Join Stones Worth Stepping for our Spring Sensory Series as we learn more about our sensory systems and our unique responses to sensory stimuli in our environment. Occupational therapists recognize 8 senses that impact how we interact with others and our environment.
