๐๏ธ Did You Know? Facts About Multiple Myeloma
Multiple myeloma is the second most common blood cancer in the United States โ yet it often goes undetected until it reaches an advanced stage. Here are a few key facts everyone should know:
๐ 1. What it is:
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells โ a type of white blood cell found in the bone marrow. These cells normally help fight infection, but when they become cancerous, they crowd out healthy cells and weaken the immune system.
๐ 2. Who it affects:
It primarily impacts adults over 60, but younger people can also be diagnosed. African Americans are twice as likely to develop multiple myeloma compared to other racial groups โ making education and early detection vital.
๐ 3. Symptoms to watch for:
Persistent fatigue, bone pain (especially in the back or ribs), frequent infections, and unexplained weight loss can be early warning signs.
๐ 4. Why awareness matters:
Early diagnosis and access to care significantly improve outcomes. Thatโs why organizations like the Calistus Multiple Myeloma Foundation are working tirelessly to raise awareness, support patients and caregivers, and fund vital community programs.
