Does anyone remember the movie My Girl? Now that I run my own residential memory care home, I often feel like I’m raising my daughter in a similar atmosphere. She’s been exposed to the reality of loss at such a young age. In the movie, Vada grows up in a home that also serves as a funeral parlor—and now, seeing things through my daughter’s eyes, I understand more deeply what Vada must have felt witnessing so much loss around her.

We’ve lost two residents this week, and when I told Trinity about Ms. K, she was visibly upset—even at just three years old. She’s become the bonus granddaughter our residents never knew they needed. She dances for them, gives them fist pumps, greets each one with joy, and always says goodbye. She’s dined with them, tried to feed a few, and shares a natural tenderness that can’t be taught. Sometimes I feel guilty bringing her with me in the evenings, but she’s growing into someone with a deep, genuine compassion for seniors. Her love for them is truly organic.
