Special Sitters

Special Sitters Professional In Home Care for children and young adults with a disability. As parents, our God given responsibility is to train our children for life.

As parents of four children, two with special needs, we understand your challenges in raising special needs children. As a parent, you experience highs and lows as your children grow through the seasons of life. We learned early, that these high and lows are amplified when you are caring for a special needs child. You want to attend your children’s sporting events, teacher conferences, and musical performances. You want to continue to date your spouse because a strong marriage creates a strong family. Like us, you probably have asked yourselves, “How do we create and maintain this balance when most of our time and energy is devoted to caring for our special needs child?”

Our desire is to help you answer that question so your family can experience the fullness of blessings available to your family because of your special needs child. A Special Sitter was inspired by our ongoing journey of parenting our family and we believe that our experiences can help you experience the fullness of blessings we have received as we have raised our family. It’s National Dog Day! 🐾
Whether they’re trained therapy animals or the beloved family pup, dogs can provide comfort, calm, and connection for children with sensory needs, autism, or anxiety.

Here’s how our furry friends help:
✔️ Offer consistent companionship
✔️ Reduce stress and meltdowns
✔️ Encourage gentle interaction and empathy
✔️ Help children regulate big emotions

Some of our sitters have even had the joy of supporting kids alongside therapy animals. 🐶💛

🎥 Looking for a movie night without the overwhelm?
In Omaha, Marcus and Alamo Drafthouse offer sensory‑friendly screenings for families and children with sensory needs:
Marcus – Reel Movies for Real Needs: Saturday mornings with quiet sound, softer lighting, and a welcoming atmosphere

Alamo – Alamo for All / Sensory Friendly Shows: Volume turned down, lights up slightly, talking and movement allowed—perfect for young or sensory-sensitive viewers

Let kiddos enjoy the magic of movies without discomfort, and caregivers enjoy peace of mind. 💛

Discovering a calmer play experience at Omaha Children’s Museum 🎨
Their “Low Sensory Evenings” and select Sensory Hours offer a quieter, welcoming environment tailored for children with sensory needs. During these sessions, the museum lowers lights and sounds, limits crowds, and offers sensory kits to support sensory comfort.

They also offer quiet spaces like the Family Discovery Room and staff trained in sensory awareness—making it easier for children (and caregivers) to enjoy exhibits at their own pace. Omaha Children's Museum

✅ Pro tips for caregivers:
Confirm sensory hour dates on the museum calendar
Bring or rent sensory tools (headphones, fidgets)
Use visual supports to explain the visit
Focus on calm transitions and break times

These inclusive visits help kids feel safe, supported, and excited to explore. Omaha Children’s Museum is dedicated to making play accessible to all. 💛

🔬 Research Spotlight
Recent studies reaffirm that early, intensive ABA therapy yields meaningful gains in communication, emotional regulation, and daily functioning—especially when started before age 4 and delivered consistently. 👦👧

At the same time, speech therapy is advancing in exciting ways: AI tools, telepractice, and even socially assistive robots are making therapy more accessible, engaging, and effective for neurodiverse kids.

At Special Sitters, we draw on this growing body of knowledge to support children in person and remotely, empowering caregivers with tools rooted in modern, evidence-based practice.

🧡 Want to see ABA strategies or speech-tech tools in action? Just ask!
