OUR INSPIRATION
KENNY’S KOUNCIL was created in memory of Kenneth T. Kenneth was a “Gentle Giant”, his presence of strength permeated any room in which he walked in. He was kind, thoughtful, and a protector of those he loved which was admirable characteristics. Kenneth had dreams and aspirations as any young man does, there was only one difference between him and many others. He had a mental illness that was not diagnosed until his adult life. There were competing voices in his head that he tried to quiet by self-medicating with prescription and nonprescription drugs. Kenneth was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and depression. It was difficult to find treatment facilities that would accept him unless he was a harm to himself or others. Access to care became an issue but Kenneth’s mom fought hard to find a treatment facility that would speak to his specific condition. Kenneth had cycles of “normalcy” and bouts of paranoia. All in all, Kenneth was a blessing to his family and friends who lovingly called him “Big Rod”. However, due to physical and mental challenges, Kenneth passed away at the age of 40 years old. He contributed to society by being a staple in his family. He made a difference in the lives of his family and friends which caused us to want to help others who are facing the challenges of mental health. There is an awareness and understanding that comes concerning mental health when it knocks on your door. No one is immune and no one chooses a life filled with these challenges.
