It is with deep respect and heartfelt sorrow that we share the passing of Mrs. Nettie Rose Bruno, who was the first patient ever at Opelousas General. Mrs. Bruno passed peacefully at home in her sleep on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the age of 91.
Mrs. Bruno is an enduring part of Opelousas General history. She marked several historic milestones as the first patient, first obstetrics patient, and first surgery patient. She delivered a baby boy by cesarean section on May 29, 1957. That” baby” is now 68 years old and stands as a testament to the hospital’s earliest commitment to quality compassionate care.
“My mother was incredibly proud to be the first patient admitted to Opelousas General,” said her son, Andre Richards. “She shared that story with many people, often recalling how the hospital opened its doors a few hours early because she was already in labor. Opelousas General always held an incredibly special place in her heart. It was more than a hospital to her; it was part of her life story.”
In May 2017, during the hospital’s 60th anniversary celebration, Opelousas General formally recognized and honored Mrs. Bruno and Andre for their unique and lasting place in OGHS history. Their story remains a powerful reminder of the legacy upon which the hospital was established - one of trust, dedication, and service to generations of families.
Mrs. Nettie Bruno will be laid to rest on Saturday, January 17. Her obituary information can be found in the comments:
